Mainly because it's the best focal range to weight ratio when considering travel, mountain hiking, etc.
For a superzoom it is really good, you will be fine regarding colour and overall contrast.
Sharpness is a bit lacking, especially when you are used to primes.
It's not much worse than the 18-55 kit zoom though. Especially in that same focal range it's okay, above that it gets less sharp. Just don't try to shoot anything macro-like with it.
The versatility comes at the price of light: the variable aperture closes down towards 5-5.6 earlier than you may expect.
If you are not restricting yourself to as few lenses as possible, I would consider the 16-80 as well. While it also just gets mixed reviews, according to some measurements on the internet it is some percents sharper and is a bit brighter at the tele end.
