- if it breaks, it breaks; no one can really repair them anymore, and they’re all pretty old.
Medium format:
+ Can also shoot the big negs
+ potentially relatively cheap
+ old mechanical ones may be more reliable long-term than the electronics in an XPan
- Bulky
- You’ll need to mask the viewfinder if you want to know what you’re shooting
- either you’re loading 120 and wasting film or you’re using 35mm in an adapter and dealing with that fiddly process.
Ultimately it’s up to you. Personally, I wouldn’t buy an Xpan (unless I saw one for like $5 at a thrift store) because I think they’re too expensive for how fragile they are, but I would really like to own one.
