And art is not really subjective. Every culture have some sort of objective standards of what they consider to be true. Photographers like Robert Frank are considered to be the greatest in the photography community. Now some fag could say that William Klein is a better photographer due reason this and this. This debate would be reasonable but if you are trying compare some random cunt in the instagram with Robert Frank then you will be a laughing stock. Of course you can be an egoist and say I FUCKING THINK THAT [X] IS THE GREATEST PHOTOGRAPHER JUST BECAUSE I THINK SO. How one could argue with it?

The passage of time filters the trash and classics are classics because they have stood the test of time. So it might be subjective on an individual level but on a collective level, no it is not. There are some names that will keep popping up not matter how much you try to discard it as "just an opinion".

Because photography is too accessible and because photography as most people here conceive it isn't art. It's a pastime. An excuse to be creepy or an asshole in many cases. A mere means of recording what's in front of you. What helped make photography considered an art back in the early days was photomanipulation. Ironically enough, shunned by most posters here. There's other ways in which it can be art, but just pressing the shutter release when you're presented with some image you like in the world in front of you isn't art.

So, the deal about gear is that it's the minimum requirement for participation in the hobby: you cannot do photography if you don't even own a camera, and it's unlikely an amateur would get into photographers if they don't participate in the hobby themselves. So you have a bunch of people who are at least at the minimum entry requirement. Beyond this, you need to put in your own effort and thought to produce something, and since it's awfully subjective, it's easy for someone to just dismiss or just praise without offering any insight and you need to actually put your stuff out there to begin with. Not to mention that you need to put yourself out there in order to even get the pictures that you'd need to put out there on line in order to participate in actual photography discussion on the board. So instead, you get people doing the one thing you can actually do by only being online and which requires minimal vulnerability on their own part, which is buying gear and discussing the qualities of the gear as relates to the *theoretical* merits it has for your photography (lot of mega pixels, very sharp, fast autofocus, etc.). Beyond this, these nerds entrench themselves in it because they refuse to admit that they're only at the bare minimum for participation in the hobby because then they'd have to be aware of their own failings as a participant, which is threatening.
I want to make a distinction here between gearfags and gear enthusiasts too: gearfags argue about gear because they can't participate in the hobby in any way beyond consuming the newest photo-taking gadget. Real gear enthusiasts are fully aware that they're in it to collect interesting pieces of gear because that's where they get off on the hobby. I don't agree with it, but they can do what they want; it's not toxic

Who the fuck started the trend of gearfagging in photography? I mean when kids get into music they don't just obsess with gear but they also listen to songs along them. And if you go to any music community people are usually obsessed with art and not the tools. But it is literally opposite for photography. Either people are obsessed with gear or they are obsessed with their narcissism and only post their own photos. Why there is such an anti-art and an anti-artist attitude exists in photography?

There's a lot of gearfagging among musicians, and a lot of snake oil being sold. People spend thousands in guitars chasing "mojo" and the perfect tone, blissfully unaware that your amplifier and the way you set it up matters a lot more than what wood your guitar was built from.
With photography at least there's some tangible and measurable benefits to better gear. Either in the form of shallower depths of field, sharpness, digital resolution, noise. The problem is they get caught up in that. They're not using the extra sharpness to create things they couldn't do before, they're just wanking about the specs.

This is pathetic too. But I was talking about in the context of boards like /mu/, /lit/, /tv/ and several communities on r*ddit, servers on discord etc. If you go there you will see that people do discuss artwork and gear and oc talk is very minimal. But I have yet see an online community dedicated for the discussion of photography is an art form.

I think of it like this: photography is less specialized (in its most basic form) then music. There's the boomer/soccer mom attitude toward photography where you just want "a good camera" for taking snapshots of things you want to have memories of in life, and I guess that attitude carries over in some way to people who want to participate in the hobby more seriously (better camera = better photos). With music, you still have to play the damn instrument.
Put it this way: humans are mostly visual, so the things the average person would look for in a photo are technical because that's what determines a well=produced photograph. It's not the composition or the theme or colour matching or whatever the fuck, it's whether you can clearly see the thing you pointed the camera at when you pressed the shutter button. It's easy to have this as a metric for a good photo, and gearfags take it a step further into arguing about which cameras is the most effective at producing quality images of whatever the fuck thing they choose to point the camera at. They don't give a shit about the abstract concepts and hate that someone would give a shit about the abstract concepts because "that's not what photography is about". With music, etc. there's already a larger barrier to entry, but a lot of my same analyses should apply. That's how you get the audiophiles of the world who search for the best setup to listen to their music with, but listen to basic music because they dno't actually have taste and instead outsource their opinions and taste to whatever it is they buy to participate in their hobby

Shitposting or arguing about pixels/worms/etc is much, much easier and more accessible than having any genuine discussion about photography. The vast majority of people on the hobby boards don't have any experience in the field that they're supposed to be discussing, and the quicker you realize this the quicker your butthurt and headaches will vanish. I'd rate /p/ only slightly above /mu/ in its current state, we still have more knowledgeable people than them but the large population of retarded children is still present
