>don't take any pictures for the entire winter because my camera says not to use it under freezing and it's routinely well below 0 degrees F here
I'm back to taking pics again bros but how do I take pics in the winter?

I've had my camera shit the bed after several hours at -20C but besides that you really should be fine. and keep in mind that it was mostly just the battery not liking the cold. camera still works fine.

normally, when you see something like "rated for 0C" it pretty much just means this was the coldest temperature they could test at. and you really can go much lower.

The one thing I'll add tho is, don't put your camera in your coat if it's cold. you might get the risk of having condensation form inside the body and the lens and that's where you actually risk breaking shit. so either, always keep the camera out or store it inside a sealed plastic bag if you're going to put it inside your coat.

yeah I already condensated the bastard once bringing it in from my car when it first started getting cold but now I keep it in the bag and know that happens. It doesn't appear to have affected it

I a Minolta SLR manual it helpfully points out you shouldn't throw away batteries that seem to be dead in the cold, because when they warm up they'll probably work fine.

Maybe you should've contemplated it sooner, then you wouldn't have missed an entire season.
How do you think people take photos in winter? They go out and shoot.
If it stops working (usually the battery suddenly loses charge, or oil gets too thick and sticky), you bring it home, let it slowly (!) warm up and it's good as new.
Keep the batteries close to your body when not in use. Never let the camera or lenses rapidly warm up after bringing them in from the cold, best to leave them in the camera bag and, if possible, toss some packets of silica gel in.
They use the same Nikons in space, they're fairly robust.
