i agree that telling newcomers to use wide angle for landscape is bad advice though. you can take good landscapes with any focal length. it depends on the scene. saying "short focal length = landscape" and "long focal length = portrait" stifles creativity and doesn't encourage newcomers to try new things and develop their own style.
