35mm film is honestly too expensive to justify unless you're a massive poseur with a 1000 dollar contax or something
digital is much cheaper in the long run and you can still get the film feel with cameras like fuji or olympus
film is still the standard for fine art photography though and if i was doing anything serious i'd wanna do it in medium / large format

Shot film for about 2 years. Loved it a lot most of the time, but I realized I got too comfortable. Film is so good at making *anything* look nice or vaguely artistic, that when I started using digital (because shooting film is pretty expensive in the long run) I realized how shit I actually was and how little I've grown.

Not saying it applies to everyone, but film was such a crutch for me, and I can recognize that in so many popular film shooters today. And if you're gonna shoot Portra exclusively like some of those retards do, there's literally no reason for you to be shooting film.

This is true, even the most basic family picture can look interesting on film, take that with a digital camera and compare the two

film is a crutch for almost everyone. what passes as a good film photo would almost certainly be a garbage tier digishit. i too stopped shooting film because I realized this. personally I think everyone should cut their teeth on digital and learn how to take a good photo first, then use film as a creative choice if they so desire. the amount of shitters who shoot film and think their photos are good because of the filmic look is an epidemic.

Analog everything has its own characteristics. I've come to hate digital everything. Music is too clean sounding, cell phone calls sound too high pitched and produce ear fatigue, digital photos are boring and require adding artificial and awful looking enhancements. Digital photography should only be used by people showing something in context not for artistic purposes in my opinion but film isn't the easiest to work with these days and here we are.

Fact is when I watch older movies it just seems like the very essence of reality is somehow captured, I don't know why the images feel more alive almost on a tactile level. Digital feels so sterile and clinical.

On the other hand I think with the tech out today, it's way cheaper and easier to make low-budget flicks, 99% the actual consumers are not going to give a fuck or even be able to discern, so I'm grateful digital is so accessible. Without it I'd probably never try making short films.

This is true, however CMOS makes *everything* look like sterile ugly shit. My first camera was Nikon D80 and with CCD sensor camera produced very nice jpgs, I barely used photoshop. Then I bought 5DM2 and I *had* to edit every photo because everything was soulless, sterile and green, you can take relatively good photos, but it you still need to apply filters or editing. Maybe closest thing that produced great jpgs was Leica Q, it was amazing, I barely touched photos afterwards, since they emulated M9 CCD look. Same with film cameras, you're always getting a *character* from the start. I sold Q and bought M7 + 50mm cron in the end.

I forgot to mention that I switched to film because I was shooting too many photos and did too little thinking. Now I think 10 times before I shot Portra on MF so my photos became much better over time.

Any good tuto on getting the film look? For some reason inbred retards crush the fucking blacks and make them look dark gray like here >>3868478 but actual film has a shit ton of contrast and dynamic range and even in high key pics the little shadows they have are pure black blotches. When someone crushes the black as in a vsco/instagram filter for the "film look" I instantly realize they never actually saw an actual film pic or video.
Its like those lolsoretro 8-bit videogames that look nothing like actual old school 8-bit games. As if the only knowledge they have is playing on emulators with a supersai filter.
