I used to swear by color, all the time every time, until I learned that color really doesn't have any point being there if its existence in the photo doesn't help the image or even hinders it. Black and white is pretty great at making you see the shapes and having your brain autofill whatever colors you may happen to like/want to see.
At the end of the day it comes down to preference and you should never force yourself to do one or the other.
