Thrift store 35mm point-and-shoot, cheapest B&W on B&H/Adorama/etc, Paterson tank, CineStill DF96 monobath. If you plan on shooting more than a few rolls it's so much cheaper developing it yourself.

uhhhh: minolta 7000 series body with a 35-100mm f4 lens or a 50mm f1.7 lens. maybe one of the cheaper ilford films like kentmere 400. it's really dead simple in aperture/shutter priority mode ig. i have my ex develop my film for me though so i haven't gotten that down yet

i say this because i'm totally new to this and the shots i took and she developed came out really decent looking even if i don't know how to make interesting photos. it's just a really sane setup. i'd be kinda scared to use a point and shoot because i'm not seeing what the lens is seeing

if you're a total purist though the 7000 series isn't entirely analog. it's automatic film loading, has autofocus, and has program modes. i think those things are pretty big quality of life improvements though and don't really detract from shooting for me. idk.

like imo the big difference is that there's no instant gratification in immediately seeing your shot, serious scarcity in terms of having exposures left on your film to shoot, and that the medium is part of the photo you take, not the specifics of the camera.

Get a Nikon FM or F2. I feel like a manual camera with a good built in meter will get you best acquainted with shooting film. Kentmere is good and cheap. I like Tri-X too. Everyone shoots HP5 but I’m not a big fan. I would send your first rolls to a lab. Getting developing stuff and a scanner and learning to use it all takes time. Too many variables at once you might get discouraged.

A film camera in working order, cheap film, Paterson tank, Rodinal clone developer, vinegar or citlric acid for stop, fixer. (Stop is optional but saves fixer.) Shoot and develop by the book until you get consistently correct results. Scan with the digital shit you have with you or find a local photo club or something with dark room and learn 2 wet print.

Chemical fail and generous sprinkle of dirt will not make a better photo. And no matter digital or film, a snap is a snap.
