So I decided to get an xt-4
Now I have to choose between the 18-55 2.8-4 or the 16-80 4
I plan mostly on landscape photography especially on 3-5 day backpacking trips. So weight is a factor but not a major one. What I care about most is image quality. Id gladly take image quality over weight or AF speed.

Went for that one. Simply because it's 2mm wider, 25mm longer, and I don't need f2.8 at 18mm. As I was looking at them, they're very similar. A bit kitlensy with soft corners, vignetting, and both barrel and pincushion distortions. On the positive, they both exhibit pro level contrast, and respectable sharpness when stopped down. I'm thoroughly impressed in that regard. Stabilization is quite spectacular in combination with xt4 as well.

Buy a 50mm eqv and a 24 or wider eqv. Primes everthing else is really compromise. Personally for my landscaping tastes I just use a 50mm Once in a blue moon I take out the 28mm but 50mm is just so useable i normally just leave it on my camera and dont feel limited.

I'm not buying a zoom lens I'm getting one as a kit lens with the purchase of the body. Im on a budget and dont own any lenses already, so getting a lens with the body for 200 dollars more is a deal I can't pass. Give me a prime lens option for under 200 dollars and I'll get it.

Adorama has x-t4 body + 35mm f/2 (discounted bundle) for $2068, pre-tax. Looks like the body is currently backordered. But there you go. Less than both the 18-55 and 16-80 bundles. It is a better image quality than both if you like te 50mm focal length, AND it is weather sealed and you don't really need OIS becase the body has IBIS. You need to think about this more, and whether or not you actually want a zoom lens.

The body costs more combined with the lens than if you buy the body only, so you are buying the lens.

The latest bodies are for those with a larger budget than you. You should be budgeting more money for lenses because lenses are more important. You can get a used X-T3 or X-T2 and used primes and your money will go a lot farther.

Thanks for the people that answered my actual question. I understand lenses are more important than bodies, I get that prime lenses are better than zoom, and I get that a used xt2 is cheaper than an xt4. But I'm not looking to buy a used camera, ive had bad luck with everything used ive ever bought and I'm financially comfortable enough to buy the xt4. One month from now I'll have another 1k to blow and I'll probably get a prime lens then, but right now I need a lens for it as I have a 5 day backpacking trip in the sierras the first week of June and I don't wanna miss an opportunity to get pictures of Yosemite. So my question was for anyone that has experience with both lenses and which one they think produces better quality images

Choose one. You're not "financially comfortable," you're just bad with prioritizing what you should spend your money on. You claim you want to prioritize image quality, but you actually don't, because you're limited yourself to shitty zooms, which compromise image quality for the ability to change focal lengths. Different guy, but I pointed out to you that buying the xf 23mm f/2 or the xf 35mm f/2 at the same time as the x-t4 body from Adorama costs less than buying the 18-55mm or 16-80mm zooms with the x-t4. They are good, small, and weather resistant lenses. Perfect use case for your trip. So what I'm thinking is you're either falling for the perceived deal of the kit lens bundles or you're making an impulsive decision. I dunno, man. Most people like to step back and have a good think before buying camera stuff. People here are usually trying to be helpful.

Yes I'm on a budget of 2k. After I pay my mortgage and bills and groceries and insurance and gas and put money in my savings and random expenses I'm left with 1500 dollars of spending money. So this month I have 2k to spend on a camera, next month I'll have another 1.5k to either spend on a prime lens or some car parts. This month I will buy a camera that I want and that is the xt4 its what I want and so I can use it in the meantime I will get the kit lens for an extra 200-300 dollars so all I am asking is which one takes better pictures, i can't make it more fucking clear.

So you either failed to communicate or decided to change your priorities. Either way, you fucked up. I've been trying to help you as others have, but you can't take a little bit of jabbing along with good recommendations, and apparently it's taken until now for you to be clear that you don't actually care about image quality most, you care about the versatility of a zoom lens most. In that case, buy a fucking zoom lens.

Yeah thats the plan. The whole point of this thread was to ask people that had used both zoom lenses if they noticed one was better than the other one. You guys brought up prime lenses and buying a used xt1 instead. I never asked for advice regarding my financial decisions the question was simply, between these 2 lenses which one is better. The whole prioritizing image quality was between these 2 lenses not between every lens ever to exist, these 2 which one is better Thats it.

Generally I'm always advocating buying older generation of cameras, but not in this case. There's substantial tech leap with latest fujis. It's worth going for xt3 to get the newest xtrans sensor, and while you're there it's worth going for xt4 to get ibis and goat video performance.

But it's still useful to suggest it to people because there are lots of people who have never even considered buying a used previous generation camera. Especially with the X-T3 vs the X-T4, where the differences are relatively minor and the price savings are huge, it makes sense to try to help someone make a good decision even if they didn't explicitly ask you to do that. You have to realize you open a discussion. This isn't Yahoo Answers where you can just pop in a question and get a direct response and that's it, no other discussion allowed.
