I agree with you.
Even if I don't agree with him. I think his point was that Davidson reinforced steretypes with his book.
The question is, was Winogrand's work so good that he was actually in any position to judge? Do you even have to deliver better work to gain the right to judge others? I mean, I can be a critic without being an artist, right?

Oh, the old "nophoto" question. You don't have to be a good photographer to judge other people's work. Personally I think Winogrand was a spray and pray snapshitter.
I find it funny that people here rave over that stupid photo of the couple in the convertible and Davidson's 1964 LA set is much better than any in Winogrand's.

spot on: it would be retarded to assume art can only be appreciated or citicized by artists. if that were the case, every art form (I mean literally every one, including literature, music, films) would only be made for a select few and a broad discussion would be impossible. seems kinda dystopian to me.
