Just buy one and stop complaining it's a lot more convenient than carrying another camera with you. Buying a used L-508 was one of the best decision I've made gear wise.
Also spot metering is a meme for 99% of photography

Explain?
Spot metering on the highlights/shadows/something in-between and locking exposure is all I ever do for high-contrast scenes. For more even lighting I don't even do that. Why would I (not OP; just a hobbyist) need an external light meter for anything other than niche applications like astro?

Something like this is much cheaper and much smaller than a spot meter or entire second camera. Not sure if it will necessarily serve your needs, but it's what I've been using lately with my cameras that don't have built-in meters.

(Also: You can get it cheaper on aliexpress, but it was slightly easier for me to find the amazon link)

Spot metering with a built in spot meter is the fastest way to ETTR on DSLRs and preserve your highlights while maximizing shadow detail. Same on neg film except of course you expose for the shadows.

A mirrorless with a good EVF, or a histogram display, is more intuitive in this respect but not much faster.

Buy an external spot meter or use a spot metering phone app that's accurate. Don't waste film when you've only got a few shots per roll.
