Flash would allow animated vectors and gradients and all kinds of effects and would easily trump GIF completely but the issue is it's too complex and intense. Another issue with APNG is it's very resource demanding on high fidelity framerate animations while GIFs are easy due to their light lossless compression. The filesizes are pretty big but it's not an issue.
When 4chan first started accepting WebM we had all types of retards taking masterfully crafted GIFs and converting them to shitty WebMs going "HURR DURR I TURN YOUR 3MB INTO 300KB DON'T MIND THE ARTIFACTS IM SAVING BANDWIDTH".
And these are the people who believe GIF sucks, still, to this day while everyone using it correctly understands it's essentially going to stick around forever because it does what it does very well.
