You're showing a photo on screen, not print.
No-one is going to view your image on anything greater than a 4k (12 megapixel) screen, the active portion of a web browser in a 4k screen is about 8 megapixels.
The resizer in your image editor is a fuck ton better than the automatic one in browsers. If you want people to see the best quality version of your image, you never want to output over 8mp. In reality, most people here are going to be viewing on a 1920x1080 screen, with about 1800 X 800 active browser space, if you want your images viewed in the best possible quality by the most people, 800 pixels on the vertical is what you want to be outputting; a less than 2mp photo.
You can crank the quality slider up to 100% at 2mp, and still stay well within the size limits.
