I want to start a photography business, and I am also a beginner.

I plan on doing wedding, event and model photo shoots. I need a camera that can fit these applications.

My budget is going to be around $600.

Since there are many choices, lets make this easy. Which camera in this list would you buy?

You will struggle to get professional-grade kit for $600.

When you've got paying clients, they will have their expectations and you must be able to meet them. You need a camera that will produce good results no matter the lighting conditions which pretty much excludes the crop sensor camera + kit lens combos you see on that website.

If you can find a reasonably new (like 2012 or newer) full frame DSLR + f/2.8 zoom for $600 then you've probably got enough to make a start with small time jobs.

Of course this is just gear; I hope you've got the actual business side of the business down.

No one will pay you without portfolio and references. You won't make a good portfolio if you're new to photography. It's simply not as easy as you think.

I have a plan.

A friend of mine is in the photography business, and does wedding photo shoots and other events.... he has spent a few years building his portfolio, but has also told me he has invested nearly $8500 starting out. I want to avoid his mistakes.

I was thinking maybe I could just get an upgraded smartphone.... maybe a Samsung Galaxy G20 with its 108 MP camera, or something similar. I would market myself as a smartphone photographer while building up an instagram/pic-time portfolio(s), and handing out business cards whenever I get the chance. I would buy some additional equipment e.g. stands/stabilizers to assist with producing professional quality photos.

That is how I would break into it, and I could buy a high end camera if need be later on. What are your thoughts on that?

lol, this is a really bad idea man, photography is not a fun business to be in, the market is oversaturated, there are tons of people who are experienced and knowledgable but dont end up making it. you're coming to it with no knowledge of the subject and already saying you want to make money doing it is kind of laughable. I'm sorry. I don't want to discourage beginners but you aren't in here to learn about photography

Yep, I'm mainly in it for the money (not the glory of someday getting a Pulitzer prize).

I basically want it for side income. Weekend work. I am talking functional photography - weddings, birthdays etc. Lot of rich people where I live, lots of money flowing. If its a bad idea then I surrender, but I know a few folks that do it and get paid...

So I am on the fence about it.

yeah I guess if you are able to do it without much risk, the only thing you could lose is your time. All I'm saying is that it is unlikely that you'll succeed, but if you have business savvy, you might. Professional photography often isn't about being a brilliant photographer. Good luck, honestly. But it might be more productive putting your time into a different business

I think you should start building up a portfolio first. Enough to be able to talk with other photographers, such as your friend, and maybe help him out at some of his gigs to get some experience. Depending on whatever skills you have you could do this on your own or maybe find some sort of classes to take. I would consider myself a relative beginner and I know I can do much better than some of the worst trendy shit on insta or some of the pics posted here, and I've been shooting on and off for most of high school (in college now). But you have to understand that success in these entertainment industries is very hard to come by, and you are competing with people who have spent their lives devoted to this as a passion. And being a gimmick photographer won't get you very far if you don't have the skills and connections to back it up.
Although if you do want to go for it and ignore all common sense, I hope you end up doing some shit like pic related and this https://imgur.com/gallery/f3Fh4 for our amusement

What is the hdr hole? I like to use a tripod for night photos and long exposures and self portraits but I haven't done much with hdr or double exposures

I get it. I guess I should get a "practice camera" first. Something inexpensive, but with a lot of options, to practice for when I get a quality camera. Build up a portfolio.

I should ask /biz/ about this: What kind of business would you put effort into, in order to have a second, weekend type job? I am looking for something more profitable than rideshare/delivery... I like photography because of the eventual travel opportunities, like doing distance weddings and stuff. Plus I don't sit down as much.

I'm pretty sure I can beat her in retouching lol. I would train up with Adobe Lightroom and learn some basic techniques to make a photo look decent.

If you're approaching this entirely from a business standpoint then aren't there better ways to make money? Like some coked up day trading? I get the sense that most artists that do weddings or shit like that do it as a compromise to do the more creative stuff, not as the main focus

Why do you want to set up a photography business? Your foremost priority should be to know how to handle a business, and if you know that you may be better off managing a restaurant than a photo service.

If you insist on doing photography as a business, you will need big investments, and by big I mean it. You will need first and foremost a local, you will need proper lighting, you should know everything about photo and video edition, for the latter you'll be needing a really good computer. You should get a drone as well since that's what businesses want. You can't do all of this alone so you will have to pay a
employees and know how to manage them.

If you want to become a freelance, amateur photographer you're going to have a really bad time. It's just not a reliable thing and people don't care about your artistic vision, they want a service.

If you like photography and you're doing this because you enjoy being behind the camera and only for being a backup to others as you say, your most needed skill would be social skills. You have to know the people personally so they can come and contact you about it, you will have to be their trusty photographer friend rather than the Professional people want a service from, because they really don't.

That being said, get a middle range camera. Most would recommend Full frame if its within your budget, but I would say APS-C works for most needs. Buy a functional tripod, and a separate flash. Try to check if you will really need features from more advanced cameras or lenses or if you can compensate some with your skill. Photography is rather simple, basically the only things you need to keep in mind is composition and proper exposure. Don't expect this to become your main source of income, and you may have a very rough start. Use this as an opportunity to network with those rich people instead.

almost impossible, unless you have unrealistic connections/reputation. Weddings pay well, they're the bread and butter of most pro photographers and it's hard enough to make a living as it is without limiting yourself for no good reason.
Also pregnant women's baby belies is another great earner - if you already did their wedding shoot and they liked your work, they'll call you for a follow up job, then if they want portraits of their kids later, they're likely to ring you rather than look for a new photographer. It's an income stream, which is what you need to keep the lights on.
