you have an okay 50mm 1.4, like the sigma dg hsm, non art version, on an okay full frame dslr.

your subject is stationary, and about 2-3meters away.
you cannot change the iso, you can only choose between shooting handheld at 1/60s f2.8, or 1/125 at f1.4

what yeilds the sharpest image?

I choose 1/125+f/2, cause either 1/60+f/1.4 is one stop overexposed, or 1/125+f/2.8 is one stop underexposed.

Depends how shaky you are. Are you good at controlling your arms and hands while shooting? If so, shoot fast as fuck, the picture will be better for it (assuming portrait).

If I have the time to take the shot a dozen times, then the f2.8 image will probably be sharper across the frame. If I get 3 chances then I'd take the f1.4.

Also depends on what aesthetic I'd want the bokeh to have and whether I need sharpness across the frame or just the centre.

I completely agree, don't get me wrong.
The story of that picture is actually funny, I had rented a memory card because the one I bought got delayed (and appeared to be lost) in the mail and I went to the rooftop to try the camera for the first time. Once there other people showed up with the news about the event that I didn't even know was going to happen. So I tried my best and came out with that. I wish I was better equipped but it was >the one I had with me, lol.
