What’s the best film camera I can get for a decent price (<$500) on eBay or Craigslist these days?

Nikon F100 for SLR
Contax G1 for compact
plenty of premium point and shoots in that price range
Mamiya 645 if you want MF

The anti-electronic camera crowd can chime in with some recommendations if you feel that an older camera is more reliable.

You're giving us nothing to go off here anon. This is like asking what's the best vehicle to buy for $30,000 and giving no more information. You're going to get everything from point and shits, to 35mm SLRs, to rangefinders, and medium format cameras recommended if you don't give some damn guidelines. There's no good answer for 'Best $500 film camera' in a vacuum.

Buy a Bronica SQ-A. $500 will get you a body, back, lens, and hopefully waist level finder.

outside of medium format, if you want the best build quality, ergonomics, optics, reliability, metering, and autofocus I would say the Nikon F100 with one or two AF-D lenses. Maybe the 35 f2 and a an first-generation 80-200 f2.8

Mamiya 645e with a wide and telephoto lens might be it for medium format.

The funny thing about film cameras is 'best' typically is far from most expensive. If you want good technology, durable, a massive amount of lenses to chose from, and something that just so happens to not cost even close to $500...get a Nikon F100

Just buy a shitty point and shoot honestly. Or a later electronic SLR like a nikon f80 or nikon 8008s. They may not last for ever but considering you can get one with a lens for less than $50 who cares.

I would actually just buy several cheaper film cameras so you can play with different form factors and formats. That’s half the fun of film. You can drop it all on a meme camera once you actually know what you like.

Canonet QL17 GIII. The Olympus XA (original, not the 1) handles like a smarter point-and-shoot and is a lot of fun with a flash, but f2.8 and max ISO 800 and no direct shutter speed control (you can kind of hack around this by adjusting the ISO as a proxy for exposure compensation) renders it kind of limited compared to a bigger camera.
