Just wanna complain and give a heads up to NEVER EVER try to clean a focusing screen (and optics in general) if it is not 100% necessary. I just scratched mine, on what was otherwise a MINT condition Nikon FE. Fuck my life.

You just added character to your gear. As long as you don't plan on reselling: own up to your mistakes, embrace it, and work through it. The camera is still 100% usable with that tiny scratch.

I clean my sensor all the time with the swabs and air duster, it's fine. The sensor is behind a sheet of glass you would have to go out of your way to fuck it up

Viewfinder dust and scratches are cool though? It won't end up on the photo (though dust migration might be a problem) and makes the OVF even more 'fun' in my opinion. Obviously its totally irrational, but so what?

Not if you have the proper tools and fluids, besides, too much dirt on the mirror affects the light transmitted to the PDAF sensor.

Update: I got a used E2 type focusing screen and so far I’ve found it to be far superior to the original screen. For one it is half a stop brighter plus it’s not as cluttered in the center. So in a way that tiny scratch lead me down to a pleasant surprise.
