If someone wants to steal your pic bad enough they will. Embedding copyright and licensing info in you picture so that is visible in Google image search will help you in lawsuits to an extent. Of the few times its happened to me though, one was a poor student so I made her put a credit on, the others are on Iranian and Chinese websites. Good luck going after them

Not great but not completely shit. The church actually looks kinda cool (albeit might need some straightening). In the train shot I feel like the highlights are blown in the sky. Try underexposing (either shooting manual or exposure compensation) and bringing up the shadows later.

I guess it depends on whether Google includes social media in its search results. I know it does with Pinterest but I don't recall even Flickr images showing up in Google searches.

But all Google does is state that the image is copyrighted and provides a link to where the image may be licensed from.

yeah, technically the image is copyrighted the moment you press the shutter button on your camera, but if you want to win any civil claims in court you'll need to have a registered copyright before the accused used your image

general rule of thumb, don't post to social media sites, read their ToS most of them your images become their property when you upload.

Well I don't post on /p/ for starters, I'm selective of where it's posted. I do usually do a small watermark in one corner of the image, because I hate seeing big watermarks in other peoples' photos.
I don't really worry about it too much, I can always take more quality photos. The person that steals other peoples' photos can't. I do local photography so if it doesn't affect my business reputation, I don't worry about it.

This. For some reason seeing a watermark "cheapens" a photo no matter how good it is, probably because I'm so used to seeing them on beginner-tier flickr images and have subconsciously formed an association that watermark = beginner quality

The ones who still don't pay for rights to your image after that would have never paid you in the first place, so there's no real loss of profits. Just be happy more people get to see your image.

Tough to prevent but you can protect your rights to the photo. Always keep the unedited original, reduce file size and crop if possible before posting. Tag/watermark your pics also. I enter my name and email in the data. This actually led to an author contacting me about using my photo for his book jacket.
There will always be photo thieves out there, you can make it tougher but difficult/impossible to prevent.
