Fujifilm x10. Cute. I take it with me everywhere. Fuck DSLR. Does anyone have experience with it? What is your compact camera of choice?

I used the X100F on an almost-daily basis for 2 years, but the GR is really the king of taking anywhere with you. I could take it on runs and it felt fine whereas the X100 and even X70 are pretty heavy.

I have always considered getting the X20. It is the most modern camera with a great separate zooming viewfinder. Xtrans is crap though, but the X10 w/ bayer sensor has its own problems and it doesn't have the nice info readout in the viewfinder.

Really useful with its 28-70 equ. (those numbers are shown on the lens barrel). Compact, discreet. Can still get good pictures today in broad daylight. Fuck the battery, it dies quickly and shut off the camera before any warning.

MFT enjoyer here with an Olympus OM-D EM-5 and hipster tier Cmount f.1.4 manual lense. it is easier to carry around than a 7D with a 70-200mm F4 and a battery grip, feels like cheating though.

I have it. You can ask questions. I rate it a 6/10. It's good at what it does and I don't see the issue with a soft lens but 28mm for me is completely useless.

Lens on it is very cringe. You need for Zeiss to get something usable out of it, but then it's so large, that you're better of with a Sigma FP and that one small lens that they have.

Oh, speaking of sony. Sony has a great budget compact camera that is hugely overlooked - Sony RX100. I bought it for around 150 USD second-hand. Really small and amazing image quality. Sadly no viewfinder in this one.

Love it so far, need to get a real wrist strap though the one it comes with is flimsy af. It comfortably fits in my pocket and takes a total of 2s to pull out and get a shot so I'm happy

Anyone has experience with the m200? It has a 22mm len that seems small enough to have the whole thing in pant pocket.
Wonder if they have gimped the manual settings, especially in video. Also if it's nice or a pain to use.

Honestly, my X-T2 with the 27mm is plenty small enough. Basically, if a camera is bigger than a GR, it's not pocketable so you may as well have a decent camera.

Because the widest lens I own is 41mm (ff equivalent) so I figured I would love to have a 28mm but as it turns out you shouldn't go below 35mm unless you specifically want a certain look

I just bought a Sony Rx100 mk1. Excited to see what it's capable of.

Another compact I never see mentioned in these threads are the Sigma DP1 and DP2 with their Foveon sensors. They can take beautiful pictures but you have to keep the ISO low.

I feel the lens was better suited for the original RX1 but the ii-r need something "upgraded" to fool people into spending 2000$ more for a slightly better camera.

Do you find it to be easily pocketable?

I thought about getting one recently, but couldn't justify it when I already have the Canon EOS M with the 22mm lens, but the 22mm still makes it too big to pocket.

Mostly jpeg desu, the x10 raws don't have a huge amount of extra information and the jpeg processing is quite good, especially if you leave the file quality at M so it can do the EXR dynamic range thing

It's not ideal, but I can get it in all my pockets. Getting it out of my pockets quickly and safely is an issue though, especially with jeans.

I have the Canon G9 X which is the perfect size for any pocket, so it'd be nice to have something with a larger sensor with comparable thickness.

How is the Olly power zoom? I have an E-M5 iii already, but like the idea of getting the E-M10 iv kit as a backup cam with a pancake zoom I can leave in my glove box or put in a hoodie pocket.

Very rich and saturated colours, soft everywhere, but somewhat acceptable iq from 16mm to 30mm, fi you can live with f4.6 already at 25mm. Great for closeup and near macro where sharpness isn't major factor. Powerzoom is annoying, but focus ring is decent.

I really want a micro four thirds camera for the size but if it is interchangeable lens I will succumb to gear faggetry since there are so many nice lenses available for m43. The lx100 has a 24-75mm equivalent lens which is perfect for photo/video and it can record 4k. It is also small, lightweight, and beautiful looking. Plenty of physical controls, manual aperture ring, leica optics, high quality evf. It is a nice camera.

rx100 m3, I love this camera. I bought a "real" camera the a6400 and I keep going back to my rx100. It fits in my pocket, jacket, back pack, everywhere. I would like an ILC camera but even the small ones are a hassle. Rx100 fits all my needs, I just wish sometimes the sensor was bigger

I have an RX100 M3 as well, unfortunately it's kinda dying - viewfinder/LCD switching doesn't work right and I sometimes have to eject and insert the SD card multiple times before it'll recognize it - and I can't warranty it or anything because it's a Japanese model and I'm in the US. It's a shame because I really like the thing otherwise and when it worked reliably it was great, really impressive performance for something that's truly pocketable, especially by the standards of 2017 when I bought it.

I have an rx100m3 and an x-t2. Though I prefer the x-t2 + 35mmF1.4 the rx100m3 still gets plenty of use as an edc and travel camera. I've taken some of my favorite pictures with the rx100m3 just because it was there when I needed it. Good for creepin too

So I had an a6000 + 7artisans 35mm f1.2 setup and I loved it to death
the only thing that was annoying me was the focus shift in the edges because of the rangefinder design.
I sold the setup and settled with an A7ii + Minolta 50mm because muh FF! and man... I shoot less now.
I miss the small lightweight cam, and because of the viewfinder, it was comfy to compose portrait shots on those. I also miss the close range focus compared to the 0.5m focus on my Minolta
I admit it's not small or anything, but it definitely felt like it

i'd say any a7/r/s, though they keep getting thicker every iteration. a7c is the same as the mark III's but without the SLR-like hump. canon rp is in between in height but wider/deeper grip

I'm actually thinking of picking up a /digishit/ again because I enjoyed shooting with my Minolta Dimage F100 (I mistakingly left mine back home). That XT10/20 on OP interested me and even a Canon Powershot G would do

you didn't mention a budget so a sony rx1r ii would be great. if you want something a bit less pocketable, you could get a fuji x-e series camera, like an x-e3 or the newer x-e4, and put on the fuji 35mm f/2, which would get you a 50mm equivalent with plenty of bokeh.

going down to a 1 inch sensor is definitely going to decrease your bokeh potential significantly. the g1x, it depends on which generation; if you're looking at the original, it's 1.5", so it's still smaller but not as small as the 1" sensors. looking at the mark iii, it has an aps-c sensor, so you wouldn't actually be downgrading your sensor size significantly in that case (canon aps-c is smaller than everyone elses's, so it is a downgrade in size still). but the built in lenses on the g series cameras don't seem particularly fast to me. you'd have to check out photos taken on the long end and see if they have sufficient bokeh for you.

As a first camera someone should get the biggest focal zoom you can get, that's how you will get familiar with all kinds of compositions as long as the shooter is not lazy zooming all the time.
Someone learning with a fixed lens will certainly become proficient in a specific focal length but become confused and uncomfortable with other lengths like 20mm or 200mm.

I bought a GR3 just to have an excuse to always have a camera on me when I cbf taking my main camera out. The thing that shits me off, even though it haan’t been a huge problem yet, is that it isn’t dust/weather sealed.
If you’re going to have a camera designed to go into your pocket or a corner of your bag, it would be better that it didn’t get fucking lint and shit inside it.

I’m probably going to get rid of it eventually and get an RX100 or just get a better phone for lazy days.

Dust is a really blown up issue with the GR line. Especially with the GR3 you'll be fine because it has IBIS, which also enables a sensore cleaning function.
I've had my GR II almost since release and I don't baby my cameras. Front pocket always worked out fine for me, and at home I put it in a tupperware box, but I do that with most of my electronics.

I got it cause the body was cheap, but I hope to replace it with something with more durable with more physical buttons and dials, and maybe 4k video.
I usually keep the 22mm f/2 lens on it since it's the most compact. I occasionally bring th 15-45mm and the 32mm f/1.4 as well.

Saltwater corrosion = strip & clean in a few hours at most (and keep it immersed in regularly changed DI water until then if possible, do NOT let it dry unwashed) if you want to avoid permanent damage. As saltwater dries the salts concentrate, and that's when they start chewing through all that nice copper and nickel tying all the components together.

If you wouldn't mind a somewhat bigger camera I can wholeheartedly recommend the M6 mark II - ticks all your boxes and you can use your EF-M lenses with it.
Be aware that it is also not weather sealed and the 4k video is supposedly softer than other cameras in this price range (I never tried it so I'm unable to confirm).

The worst thing for me is actually the shutter sound, no idea why, I just hate it.
I guess the menu issue would go away if I sat down and memorized the manual but other camera manufacturers definitely have better structured menus.
I mean it's definitely a usable camera if you are okay with shooting RAW only and can tolerate the shutter sound, but to me it feels like riding a bicycle with not enough air in its tires.

I know compacts don't always have this, but imho, if it's got interchangeable lenses it should also have an EVF. On compacts with a fixed lens that defitinely fit in a jeans pocket that's no real concern to me.

Sony Nex-6 with a 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS

Olympus Pen E-PL5 with 14-42mm 3.5-5.5

They are both 150€ each and they seem to have really similar specs overall. Only thing i like more about the sony is the integrated viewfinder. Just trying to get some more recommendations i guess since the olympus seems to have more freedom on the overall settings. All input appreciated

It's a film camera so keeping it in your (possibly hot) car all day may negatively impact the quality of the film in the camera. Other than that it's a nice camera to have on you at all times.

My main camera is an oly pen epl8 with adapted manual focus lenses and I had a great time using it. My biggest problems with it are the 2x crop (which sometimes comes in handy too) and the quality falloff on higher ISOs.

f/2 will get you a shallower depth of field on a larger sensor than on a smaller one, it's why pretty much everything is sharp when taken with a tiny smartphone camera

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but does a compact camera exist that can do 50mm/70mm portraits with natural bokeh or are those types of photos mostly reserved for cameras with bigger sensors and faster lenses?

Shooting in RAW on my phone's been pretty nice for awhile and I personally think I've gotten decent results with it but it's left me wanting more postprocessing headroom and portraits with authentic bokeh instead of the fake shit, though I'm more interested in compact options just as a means to start out. Budget is $350-$550, preferably with at least 2x/3x optical zoom.

Tricky question, you can get good oof with $150 stuff but they have 250-300mm focal lengths to do so, some go to even 600mm.
But if you want big sensor with a 50-70mm for less than $500 i think maybe the Canon G1XmkII? those cameras have decent RAW files but distorted as hell lenses.

Yes, the RAWs are pretty good, somehow better than most shit Canon put out in those years but you might find sharpness inconsistencies if you shoot really close portraits.

I don't think that's the one i meant, i refer to uneven distortion that makes the part about correcting it trickier because there's no simple way.
This means doing it manually via warp or having a tip top camera profile for it, the G1Xs doesn't have the level pic related does but it might appear or at least that's what i've seen with the Mark III, the Mark II i don't recall being that strong but i read something like it.
Basically don't put an important straight line near the upper or lower borders and you will probably be fine, but if i were you i would just carry that extra weight from a cheap DSLR than compromising with a compact made to get the shoot no matter how distorted.

Man I bought a T2 around 6 years ago because the lens paired with Portra film leads to a color harmony that I really like. Paid 90€ for it which was the regular used price in pristine condition with case and box. Had so much fun shooting with it. Then the prices rose rapidly and I started to baby the T2 (also because I heard people had them fail a lot). Sold it at 500€ because I was getting a little bit too careful with it which defeated the purpose why I got it. Still think of this camera from time to time, but now it's way too expensive for what it is. Sad.

It was the normal price back then on Ebay. That said it was still considered super pricey, because everything else in comparison was even cheaper. I was rocking a Minolta XD 7 with 5 lenses, that in total cost me the same as the T2. That whole era ruined film for me today.

Would I be a fool to go from an X-T2 to an X-E4? I want the reduced weight, want the sports viewfinder and the white balance saved setting with custom C modes.
I don’t care about the loss of the back dial (I just use the exposure comp) or the focus switch (I only use autofocus).
I’m 95% decided, just want to make sure I’m not missing something.

It gives a frame line within the frame which is a 1.25x crop of the image. It basically makes the 27mm into a 35mm if needed and you can see slightly outside the frame. It also gives a night continuous shooting speed if that floats your boat

I like it as I used to shoot rangefinders a lot and it’s hard to go back to DSLR style. However I want to be able to see the exposure and colours before I take the photo. I also prefer the 50mm focal length but the compactness of the 27mm.

On digital sensors bigger than M4/3 this causes massive vignetting, colour smearing and colour drift everywhere outside of the centre region.

Close: film is less sensitive to the incidence angle. You can still stick a lens element right on top of a digital sensor, as long as the light exiting that element is not leaving at a shallow angle (i.e. is more collimated).
In practical terms, this mostly just means you can use wide-angle lens designs that are not retrofocal or need a collilator group.
