I'm new to lenses and wanted to pick up a relatively cheap wide angle lens for nature and sky photography. I was thinking of Tamron 10-24mm, what do you guys use?

be careful as wide angles are not easy-mode nature/astro photography, the opposite in fact, they make composition much more difficult because there's so many more elements in the scene.

I've heard many good things about the Tokina 11-16 f2.8.
The only wide crop lens I own is the Tokina 12-28 f4, that one is ok at best.

For night sky astro it does alright for milky way scenes though

10mm is equal to 16mm on Canon, 10mm is equal to 15mm on Nikon.

If you want cheap small wide angle lenses you're better off going with micro four thirds where the lens mount is designed for the sensor size and isn't a shitty adapted device with a poorly managed crop factor.

I own the Tokina 11-16 2.8 for F-mount. Its not a great lens if its your first go with ultra-wides: Its got weird field curvature @ 11mm, 2.8, and infinity where the center is super sharp and the corners are super soft. Manual focus past infinity to get *slightly* less sharpness in the center and very good sharpness in the corners. Additionally, @ 16mm the corners are soft, even at f8 or so.

Otherwise, the coatings/colors are great, and @ 11mm its always sharp if you take into account the curvature. Its not a perfect lens, but I find it very charming in its character.

Canon 10-18, this is not negotiable. 300 bucks gets you professional level image quality, I about shit myself first time I played with one. It's right up there with my Tamron 15-30 2.8 VC and those aren't exactly cheap.

If you are on APS-C and shoot anything other than the Canon 10-18 STM and don't need f2.8 you're a faggot.

Nikon made a bunch of manual focus 20s that can be had around 200 if you shop. The 20 3.5 UD pre-ai is pretty fucking good.

If you want to spend a bit, the first-gen Tamon 15-30 2.8 VC can be had just north of 500 and I got one, the images it makes are exceptional.

Where did the 'wide-angle' for landscape come from? Ken Rockwell's guide on ultra-wide shooting is surprisingly informative and he says much the same; newbies have a tendency to want to 'fit it all in' and end up making empty and boring wide angle photos. Tele's allow a little more 'focus' and deliberate framing and can produce really awesome landscape shots.

I wish Sigma updated the 8-16mm aps-c lens. It was a pretty amazing rectilinear wide angle lens that has no equivalent right now.

It's what I use still. The firmware got fucked somehow, so I can no longer autofocus with it, but I never need that, so I haven't bothered fixing it.

The wider you can get the better. For nature and landscape, I feel 16 is "too long". You can work it sometimes, but ideally it should be 14 or even wider if possible.

If you're working APS-C on, I think the native lenses can only provide 16mm equivalent, so I don't know if you need some adapter or something to get wider FOV on APS-C.

On m43 there's 7mm lenses that's 14mm of 35mm equivalent

Depends on the APS-C body you're using. 16mm is not good, 15 is "getting closer", but ideally you want 14mm. Canon has a 11-24 FF lens, which is unbeatable.

Keep in mind that the focal length doesn't matter unless you can justify using an ultra wide lens on the landscape you are photographing. If you have high mountains and/or buildings with lots of interesting foreground details, then sure, but if your landscape is more on the rolling green hills side you might benefit from a much longer lens to get an interesting perspective.

Superb lens but is a bit soft wide open, once stopped down to f/5.6 it's bretty damn sharp. Build quality is great and if you're into video, the manual focus is buttery smooth.
