Nikon D300 in 2021?

I was given a Nikon D300 as a hand me down camera while I was looking online for an entry level DSLR. How does the D300 hold up today compared to entry level cameras on the market?

I paid $2000 for a D300 back when it was first released and still have it to this day.

In terms of build quality and shooting (AF, shutter lag, responsiveness, etc), you are getting a phenomenally better camera than an entry level body.

In terms of image quality... it's not bad, certainly good enough to produce quality shots in good lighting.

Yeah, you can check the EXIF to see that I shot that using my D300 at base ISO way back in 2008.

If you are going to upgrade, the biggest single bump up in quality you'll get is if you move up to a full frame body (D800, D750, etc).

But for daily shooting, the D300 is great, if not a little heavy.

I have shot with a D700 with almost 600k shutter still going strong.

The shots hold up to todays cameras just fine when good technique is used.

With a good prime lens it will take very good photos.

I would recommend some of the nikkor manual focus lenses. They are cheap, and they are good.

OP I have a d500 and fucking love it. Get the 16-80 f2.8 for everyday stuff and a big tele to really make the extra reach shine

I don't think not having FF is as big a deal as most of the board seems to think it is.

Compared to modern camera it's really not that great but again you got it for free... Buy a good prime lens and you'll have fun for a while.

This is true of the D700 but the APS-C nikons have a lower shutter rating.

That said, OP, the D300 is a great camera by any standards and you could absolutely produce professional-quality images with it. Enjoy!
