Either extension tubes or lens inverters will do the trick. Get tubes with actual electronic conections because you're gonna need to close your apperture a bit. F9-F12 works for most cases.

I shoot on a d5100 and for macros i got the AF-S Nikkor 40mm 2.8 which does a nice job for a budget

Took my macro tubes out today, didn't get any good shots since I was just snapping handheld with no flash, and my filter was super dirty for some reason.

But I liked this little guy, he was really sparkly.

I don't know if I have the patience for it or not, but I love the idea of photographing insects.

I haven't seen any interesting insects around this year. Maybe because I haven't looked for them in my new area. I also don't have a good flower bed with visually appealing flowers for the occasional interesting insect to land on, so right now I'm shit out of luck.

Here's essentially the only insect photo I'm really happy about. Took it last year.

Funny story times: I was grabbing my backpack when I noticed this guy on it. I had macro lens on my cam, so I quickly took this pic of him. Then I brushed him off, or so I thought. Got in the car, and halfway to my destination I noticed him crawling over me. If he got lost somewhere in the car, he'd be dead of heat and thirst, yet he somehow clung to me in sight, survived the journey, and found a new home in a forest.
