Why would I want one? It looks like something that's meant for camera shops, it's probably too expensive and definitely too big to keep in a normal home.

No. It is to support professional photographers who are members of the Canon Pro Services programme. It provides replacement and repair of gear that gets damaged as well as rental.

To become a member I believe you have to show that you are a working professional AND already own a shitload of high end gear. I am not a member so I am not au fait with all the details.

No, the company does. Whether it be their own or one they simply work for. It's actually a small price to pay for the kind of insurance that regular insurance can't provide.

Okay thanks that makes a lot more sense. That actually sounds like a pretty sweet deal and the fees aren't really that high especially if you're doing it professionally.
