Did Nikon fuck up? Yes, absolutely. There's absolutely no doubting the fact that they adopted mirrorless too late, and they paid the price in their share value. But what they did in the meantime was absolute genius, and that was the development of the Z mount. More on this later.
A maverick in any industry will usually undergo some unique innovator hurdles, the majority of which their main competitors don't take the journey on. Sony is bar-none the biggest and best mirrorless innovator. Canon has tried to step up to the plate, but just like in the DSLR world Canon is kinda always chasing the big dog (then Nikon, now Sony). What's really cool is that together, Sony and Canon are defining the limits of currently mirrorless technology, and setting a consumer standard. All the sudden the proverbial field goal is emerging from the mist.
