A (heavily) photoshopped image is a representation of the image of a thing that exists in your mind, but not reality, i.e. what you believe that thing to be. Not only that, everyone understands this already, and the challenge has become to compete within this context. It shouldn't be "Nature's Colors", it should be "Who can appeal most to some fictional, idealized version of nature that exists in the imagination of the judges, and nowhere else."
People want simulacra, nothing else will satisfy them and they see no problem with it. Anything that clashes with the fictional notion of reality that exists in their mind is an "imperfection" and must be destroyed.
