Traditionally art is valued on a very high technical ceiling, high barrier for entry, but low creative ceiling. Photography has a very low technical ceiling, very low barrier for entry (thanks to smartphones) and very high creative ceiling.
To use a sports analogy, other forms of art are more like bobsledding or polo, once you're over the initial hump, you're likely to be competitive on the world stage; whereas photography is like the 100m sprint, EVERYONE does it, but that means relatively, almost everyone sucks, and it takes a much harder grind\talent to get good in comparison to others.
And just look at the proof, /ic is filled with talented individuals that can create desirable and respected work off the back of their skills on demand, with very little throwaway work. Whereas on /p, 99% is absolute fucking garbage, and that's after the photographers here cull 1000 shots down to their top 5.
I would argue that literature isn't anywhere near as pure an artform, as books are too long and too open to interpretation from the reader to convey a clear message from the author. It's the art equivalent of a gish gallop.
And music? Fucking music? There hasn't been an original idea in music for decades. Musicians appeal to musicians not through original thought, but through "obscure" time signatures and quirky instruments. Like they're desperate to scream "I'm not like the other girls, I don't wear makeup".
People speak down on photography because they are scared of it, not because it is beneath them.
