And I’m not convinced that for CMS 20, or 50D, or even Rollei Retro 80S that behaves the same, the issue is edge sharpness.
The main issue is that the grain is so small that it’s not resolved by most scanners (including dedicated ones). So you don’t get sharp edges on the grain, not because the grains don’t have them, but because you aren’t resolving individual grains to see that.
If you were to scan at real 6000-8000dpi with a calibrated drum scanner, I’m sure you’d get really sharp results.
Or alternatively (and cheaper), put it on the enlarger and enlarge as much as you can (even if you need to crop), say with a small part of the frame filling a 11x14” or larger piece of paper.
Then you can see the actual sharpness and grain, given a decent enlarging lens.
