Is this a good filter compared to fixed nd? Are there any cons i should know about?

Since a variable ND is really just two stacked polarizing filters, they don't work well with wider lenses, and occasionally you'll get a horrific purplish dark cross across the middle of your photo.

Otherwise, they work pretty well. Don't cheap out or you'll end up with color shifts.

I’ve got one, it’s freaking sweet. Never got that X pattern. It’s K&F Concept. Not crazy expensive, but they’re good.
I use that on a TZ100 with a magnetic adapter, so it works as a CPL & VND. Handy for long exposures on water, I love it.

Slim metal ring sticks to lens, then screw your filter into the magnet adapter.
Works great, but I accidentally ordered one a bit small, so get some vignetting unless I zoom in just a little.
This is MY fault, not the product.
Magnet is strong, though I guess you could potentially knock it off if you’re clumsy.
If you’re not using it, you’d never notice the ring on the lens side.
I highly recommend.
It’s all metal, looks good when it’s on.

If you get that X shadow, I can vouch the K&F will NOT do that.
I can’t remember why… science n sheeit.
I Always have a CPL at minimum attached to all my lenses. Don’t have any with the variable on my iPad and I’m not at home… here’s my local river wave.

thanks. just ordered a magfilter that should fit my fixed compact and a K&F combined var nd/cpl that also fits my other lenses. both items were price discounted so I had to. Ive read that 24mm equiv. and above focal lengths should avoid the cpl vignette.

Does anyone know how to expose properly with an ND filter on? If my Pentax didn't have a through-the-lens light meter I would have zero clue how to calculate it

this tells me you have absolutely no idea of what even the basics of exposing a shot are

anyhow the filters reduces the amount of light you sensor receives by a set number of stops so if you meter externally you should just compensate your measurements by increasing the stops by the same amount when setting up the camera

It also depends how aggressively you use it. You might not get the X pattern at the lower ND values, but a noticeable X pattern on the higher values.

So N2-8 might look ok, but if you twist it to n32 it will give you a pattern

I have a 55mm and 72mm filter thread sized KF concept variable ND filter and neither has given me issues. But the widest I shoot with both is 24mm

I have a couple, one for each lens size. I think I paid about $45 a piece for them. I don't use them often but they work well enough for me.

Actually, the $10 ones on Wish are pretty darn good. Other than a slightly warmer tone (about 150K), there's no color shift. They even have IR cut (not advertised). But yeah, it's still best to avoid wide shots, especially for video work.
