Its for street photography. It's supposed to look like an inconspicuous black box / cheap point and shoot brick even though it's not and you could print billboard pics with the images from it.

Why? The GR III is a really small camera with an aps-c sensor and a sharp lens with a useful focal length. It can produce really nice images.

I don't particularly like how plain and plasticky it is, but I DO get the appeal. It's the ultimate low profile, non-flashy, sleeper camera. Destroys basically every camera its size and looks totally inconspicuous. For some people this is the absolute perfect camera.

But me, I don't think I'd like it.

would be nice if they release a weathersealed one to minimize the dust and fix the dial jump issues. also bring back the flash, even a non popup will do. but I doubt they will release a iv very soon, limited iii versions are still rolling.

Yes, buy a compact with RAW capabilities from years ago if you want to start learning on the go, if you want to give yourself time and space then go for a student's DSLR.
You shouldn't spend more than 300 dollars for a beginner's camera, lens included.

I started off with a GRii. Helped me learn exposure triangle really quickly and easily since it’s so easy to control with one hand. But as the other anon said, there really is no reason to spend more than $300 and if I could do it over again I would’ve started off with a cheap used DSLR with a kit lens so I could figure out what focal lengths I like shooting at. Still use my GRii and love it but definitely overkill for a first cam.

its a niche camera. are you fine with only a 28mm focal length like your phone, no built in viewfinder and flash? xf10 is cheaper, but also has quirks.

Don't count on it. Ricoh is very slow updating these cameras. You can buy a new griii today and rest assured it will stay modern for a couple more years.
