Does anyone know anything about how cameras automatically set the flash power for the pop-up flash? My GH2 does not have a manual power setting mode and I can see that it changes the power from shot to shot.

Flash fires in low power, photosensor detects amount of light that falls onto film plane/sensor, this is used to calculate required flash power, main flash then fires with that power.

is it possible that the first and second flash are so close together that you can't see the first one? I'm only sensing one flash from my camera.

Yes, they will be a few ms apart at most.

just get a light man. flash aren't designed for this. you could literally tape a a cheapo LED flashlight to your tripod.

I have confirmed that lilies open without sunlight, as long as they have water. Idk about other flowers yet. So I will have the camera set up in a dark room where it will take a flash photo periodically.

Why are you using a flash for this again? It's a time lapse of flowers opening. You've got some room for very long shutter speeds.

Why not? Anything you do will look better than the onboard flash.

the pop-up flash can be very dramatic and beautiful, and I've modified it by making a little softbox. I haven't taken a test shot yet but I think it should look good with my background.
