So what's the deal with weather sealing? How necessary is it and what can you expect from it?

Its a meme because Canikony don't IPX rate their equipment and if it gets fucked by water or snow they will not replace it under warranty. From experience owning a D850 and D810 they can handle intense downpours because the cameras are made to handle precipitation (from the top). What you want to avoid is having them completely submerged or getting the bottom wet. If water gets into the battery door it'll fuck your entire camera.

If weather sealing is necessary, there's only one brand you can rely on: Olympus.

The E-M1X, E-M1 Mk III and the E-M5 Mk III are all IPX-1 rated. Pic rel is water being poured on the camera (with a weather sealed lens mounted). Olympus encourage reviewers to literally run the cameras under a tap.

For rain, snow and dust/sand, you can rely on an Olympus to not break.

I wonder how hard it would be for them to come up with a bigger sensor design. Their cameras are fairly large for what they are.

Yeah if it's raining down itll be fine. Some people put protection on but normally the rubber gaskets are sufficient. And desu most camera bodies will be fine in at least light rain since they're just big slabs of plastic. When I owned and entry level DSLR from Nikon I used it in both rain and snow and it never failed on me.

I've got a D800 but I'm so paranoid about damaging it or the lens that I basically only ever shoot in fair weather.

The moment they actually commit to a IP rating, I'll actually consider upgrading cameras. Cameras from the last 5-7 years of any brand are capable of doing anything you ask them to. No point in upgrading without a game changer feature like an actual IP rating.

There is even an official video from olympus UK I think where they immerse a lens half way into water to get a underwater/surface shot.

Weather sealing gets better the more money you spend. The more money you spend, the less likely you are to want to test that capability.

I'll start using my cameras in rain when companies stop refusing warranty repairs for water damage.

just get a rain cover its really not an issue. the only thing you need to think about weather wise is letting the camera climatize before shooting

You can reduce the severity of this by using a filter and putting your lens cap on. Went down south recently and had some definite 20f swings going in and out of buildings that fogged my glasses. Did this and the front element of the lens was well insulated. Obviously a mid-winter day in a cold climate would be different but for a lot of conditions this is enough.

You can expect your weather sealed camera can take some rain and keep working. You can't expect it's fine if you place it in a puddle or dip it in water. Warranty will not cover water damage.

If you want to shoot in a pool, bring a waterproof tough camera. You can expect it will survive if properly maintained and handled as instructed in user manual. Warranty will not cover water damage.

Proper rain that get you spoaked you if not wearing rainproof clothing but not pressure washer level rain. I faintly recall seeing some torture tests but possibly those are not so common because warranty does not cover water damage.
