If your camera can put out beautiful, unique jpegs (mostly fujifilm)? Raw + JPEG.

For everything else, Raw.

Raw - captures everything (needs to be edited to your liking) larger files
Jpg - your camera decides what to keep discarding information that is irrelevant to the exposed photo, smaller file size
Raw + jpg - saves one of each (easy if you’re trying to scan through a bunch of photos to see what’s worth saving or editing or if you’re happy with jpgs keep them) takes up the most space.

The raw file usually also contains the jpeg. It is embedded in most raw files but there are some exceptions. Sony raw files only contain a downsized jpeg.

If you have a program to edit RAW files, shoot RAW

JPEG/RAW if you want to use the un-edited pictures right away without needing to import / export. I did this during a trip where I had a crap laptop at a hotel, wanted to share some photos from the hotel wifi as JPEG but wanted to edit the RAW files when I got home to my PC

raw if the dynamic range is big or the camera fails on awb or you will edit the pics anyway

No it’s actually different, RAW +jpeg gives you 2 files… Nikon embedded jpeg is minuscule resolution too

What are you shooting and do you plan to edit a lot? Are you doing work for clients and need the most flexible fules for editing it the best way possible? Use RAW

If you're simply shooting for your own enjoyment and to post on IG/Fbook etc then jpeg will suffice

What's the best post image processing program for fixing lens distortion for windows? All of my RAW wide angle shots look like they're bent out of shape compared to the jpegs.

I shoot raw+jpeg because SD cards are cheap these days. I sometimes make minor tweaks in Lightroom so I need the raw. But I want the jpeg since there are a lot of family photos and I assume people will be able to open them in the year 2100 but who knows about some weird raw file from whatever weird camera from my collection I’m shooting that day.

Darktable has a "lens corrections" module that will probably fix this if the lens is in the catalogue.

If you're shooting dozens/hundreds of interesting pictures it can be time wasting to edit all of them. I edit and save my favorite raw shots to a separate folder, then dump all of my okay/good jpegs into a general folder in case there's a certain series of shots I want to go back to.

I used to shoot fuji raw+jpeg but then I realized there's literally no point because capture one express processes the raw in an almost indistinguishable manner with the same film sim selected and with lens correction turned on (vignetting correction is off by default for some reason), except you have the added flexibility of being able to make huge exposure adjustments and change the white balance.

I have never done any RAW editing, are there any good tutorials working through the process? Preferably with quite a lot of info about why and how to do certain things to get nice results, not just someone telling you to set a preset to value x "because it's good".
Also, worth having one of those programs if l have Photoshop CS6? I guess thet could be easier/quicker since they are only for RAW editing?
