I'm tired of shooting digital, it gives me no joy anymore.

Just click, picture is taken, instant gratification.
Besides, I can achieve the worms if i just reticulate my film.

I've been thinking of selling my fooji and instead purchase a dedicated film scanner that supports medium format.

Y'all got any scanner suggestions for around 1500 usd?

There hasn't been a film scanner of any notability released for like 20 years, they are severely deprecated.

1500 will however buy you a Sony a7, 90mm macro, a good quality flash, some film holders, a copy stand, a focusing light, some light diffusion opal acrylic and the color perfect plugin for Photoshop.

The Sony 90mm f2.8 is an outstanding macro lens, which is why the a7 is a good choice for doing this. Mirrorless is also better as the live view is much better than on DSLR, and focus magnification on the grain is essential for maximum quality. Z and RF don't have a suitable macro lens yet and are beyond your budget. And full frame is going to get exponentially sharper results than crop.

sony 90 macro is still more expensive and softer than laowa 100mm macro. And laowa still can be mounted on any camera, including dslrs.

For that money you could get nikon d800 and laowa and still have some cash leftover

The laowa is an excellent lens, and if it's only ever used as a copystand then probably the better choice than the sony 90mm. Live view on the d800 is absolute aids though and in no way comparable to even the first gen FF Sony, the Sony is also MUCH better for tethered shooting, nor does the d800 have a tilting screen, which will make this process suck ass. Also the d800 is about 20% more expensive 2nd hand in stores than the a7, at least here.

So a 3 inch, 1 million dot screen with decent latency? i guess all of them since 3 to 4 years ago can do that other than Fuji stuff made for minimalism. If you mean DSLR, then the D780 can do it and even has a dedicated 135 scan mode too, the pro sport bodies can from Canikon, the 5DmkIV has a good one too, i can argue the D850 can pull it too.

Not really, all the drum scanning places I used to use were dedicated to drum scanning. Labs use ccd line scanners. Stop trying to backpedal, just admit you were wrong and that you learnt something, it makes you look a lot less stupid.

And if you want to use the d780 film scan mode, the adapter is $200, you still need an off camera flash, it only does 135 and you need a compatible Nikon macro lens. Oh, and the film mode spits out jpegs, lmao.

And if you think DSLR's can do decent liveview because they have an ok rear screen, you've clearly never used a DSLR. Lmao.

And no, you don't need to close any curtains, just make a light proof box from the lens to the film, a 3" cardboard tube works fine. the working distance for a 50mm macro at 1:1 is about 10cm, you can use a full spectrum white light panel if a flash is too big too (but they're not cheap). which would make the whole setup about the size of a desk lamp.

Film scans on a scanner take a long ass time, a single frame of 135 will take about 5 minutes to scan and 5 minutes to transfer over parallel port connection, then you can quadruple those times for medium format. Oh, and I hope you don't have wooden floorboards, otherwise every time you step on them, then there's a high chance that it will jog the image mid scan.

You really are mindbendingly stupid, if you spent 10% of the time you do on 4chan exhibiting how dumb you are, on actually learning, then you wouldn't be such an embarassment.

To focus, you're not gonna grain focus through an optical viewfinder, you're shooting at 1:1 macro on an object a tenth of a mm thick, your critical focus range is absolutely miniscule.

If you have glass holders, yeh, most film holders are plastic with an air gap though, and any waviness or curve in the film will knock it out of critical focus from shot to shot.

a script on the computer runs the spool on the top, pulls the 120 roll through in small steps, scans at each step. you run the 120 roll through twice to get its top/bottom. once both runs are done panotools can do the merging

current hangup is I'm waiting on some aluminum scan trays and a c41 powder kit to arrive so i can dev a roll to scan

i concede that the plustek sensor setup is marginally lower end than the coolscans, although ive never seen any really objective tests for this

it's basically just a dslr copy stand, with a lead screw to adjust the camera z height, bellows from lens to film plane, glass film holders, and a stepper motor with little rubber wheels to move the film tray, and a 95% CRI light panel for illumination. The stepper and camera will be triggered by an arduino.

I'd guess that autofocus with a decent lens might work, but I'm starting with just using an enlarger lens.

Basically want to make the DIY camera rig into a tidy, compact, all in one unit, that works with any camera and macro lens.

Look at the top left corner of the "My scan" it's got some light leak and it's even showing less of what's in the frame on the lab scan. This is a huge fuck up that cannot be anything but user error.

The camera scan is dogshit. The lab scan isn't great either, but trying to claim THAT camera scan is good is laughable.

yup, absolutely love NLP. i've been using it for well over 2 years now, the initial $100 purchase was more than worth it by now. he keeps updating it, with a new beta version released the other day. color accuracy keeps improving imo.

Why don't you tell us what's available and affordable to you, you can't afford a coolscan, don't want a DSLR rig, don't want a flatbed, can't afford a minilab, it looks like you shoot medium format so can't afford a suitable plustek.

No scanner does this at your budget.

Literally your only dedicated consumer scanner that does this is a Pakon F135+ and they are approaching US$3k on eBay at this point and require a legacy PC/software to run. They are also falling apart/breaking down after 20 years of use and used replacement parts are a small fortune since they are NLA.

You are simply shit out of luck, repeat, the product you are looking for does not exist at your budget.

Scanners never really improved from that period and most current dedicated scanners are a shitty regression. You essentially have 3 options for a passable scanner these days:

>plustek
Scanning takes hours because you have to manually push through the film and scan each frame individually 6 frames at a time.

>epson flatbed
Shithouse resolution for 35mm, mediocre for medium format.

>primefilm xa and its derivatives
Better than the plustek but more expensive and less reliable. Technically has batch scan but doesn't do it very well and user babying is required.

They sell a proper batch scanner for US$2k or so I believe.

Hence older scanners like Pakons which take 15 minutes for a whole roll with no user input are absolutely spiking in price with the new popularity of film cameras.

Hopefully this can lead to some new development. Nieche market, sure, but feels like there might be a demand now at least.

Also, this is probably retarded, but aren't there some regular office scanners with a super high DPI? Although I guess even f you had something like 1600 DPI the resolution would be trash for such small things as film.
