Is sharpness just a meme??

I have never seen a photo and thought "wow if this wasn't sharp it would be trash" or "wow if this was sharp it would be good".

Every wildlife photo where you've admired the texture and detail in fur, feathers and eyes, and every wildlife photo you've not even noticed as it's just a brown blob with eyeballs.

Or macro shots showing off flora & fauna in amazing detail.

Or all the shots that you didn't even give a chance to tell if it was good or not, because the softness gave it a worthless snapshot vibe.

What you've never, ever done, is think "wow, I wish this photo had less sharpness\detail" (real sharpness, not going full salgado on the clarity sliders)

If you are shooting for yourself, for your own enjoyment you can probably tolerate a little technical deficiency in the quest for an image that you enjoy.
If you are covering a breaking news story it is quite probable that getting the shot is more inportant than technical perfection.

If you are shooting for a client or for a stock agency then you need to be in sharp or you wont get paid.
If you are shooting wildlife or macro you probably won't be satisfied yourself if your images are soft.

Look at the branches in the top of the pic, it's obviously a wet day. When it shits down where I live, it's usually windy af too, so there's little to nothing you can do about it.

Yeah, I have several. Won't help you around here though. Even if you hold a UV filter in front of the hood to focus, then whip it off and snap a shot, there's a 90% chance you'll have a couple of drops on there at least.
It's fine if it's not windy, but sadly rain here is mostly horizontal. If you can't get your pic looking downwind, it's just something you gotta live with.

I did, multiple times. Sharpness is crazy impressive, and seeing high detail is always pleasant, i'm often in awe when i see a wide landscape photo with great detail and get hit with this micro/macro/wide picture feel of scale differences.

No, it's a quote, from a street photographer, about his own street photography.

And I don't think you know what the word ubiquitous means. For everything hcb said against resolution and sharpness, gursky and Adams have said for sharpness and resolution. Is hcb, who by all accounts was a talentless hack, just very early to the street photography game, a more reputable source of absolute photography knowledge than the man the invented the concept of modern metering and the man who has sold the most expensive photographic work to date? Arguably not.
