So, assuming you're looking at the hood from the back (i.e., the side with the sports finder. so the magnifying glass is further away from you), the little wing on the right side has a bump on it. If you pull up the sports finder, there should be a channel in the wing on that side. The bump goes in that little channel. So the wings on the top part are on the outside and the wings on the sports-finder part are on the inside.
Then, when you lift up the top, it automatically pulls up the sports finder half and forms a little chimney. Put it back down and the whole thing folds up in one smooth motion. The wings hide down in the sides of the camera body when it's folded up.
(It's cleverer than the method my Mamiya C220 uses, which was the TLR I'd used more recently, which is why I was confused)
