Hello! In this thread I'm going to promote my new photo book. This is my first book experience and I hope you find it pleasant.

One of my oldest photos, which I was enormously lucky to obtain.
This is Kirche Tharau in Kaliningrad region. It had been in the process of renovations from a completely abandoned state when I happened to stumble upon it. However, all of the workers and security were gone. And so I entered, ascended the sketchy scaffolding and found these wonderful triangles under the roof.

Remnants of an old WW2 hangar. Kaliningrad region again, but different trip.
On that day some of those hangars were being demolished, to great shame. See next post.

Photography is a visual medium, not literary. Sometimes a little background info for the set is necessary for it to really sink in, but if each photo is "this is a neat photo because *photographer's opinion* then it's a detriment to the experience of looking at the photos themselves. There's no room for the viewer to wonder about the specific context, and the photos no longer have to speak for themselves. Is OP writing an article or presenting a collection of photos? It's presented like a collection of photos, so I assume it's that and not an essay. So he should probably work on having his photos explain themselves instead of crutching his way through it with his own interpretations of what he shot: his way of interpreting the scene is through the goddamn photo

Clearly that's an exaggeration, which wasn't a good choice to make. My point is that the photos, if done right, shouldn't have to rely on individual captions to explain why they're impactful. To me, if the photo doesn't stand on its own or the context of the project is so vague as to need it, all that extra info is in the realm of "neat, but no one asked"

I mean, if that puts me in a minority then fine, but I do think that most of the work of interpretation should be in the work itself, and not as externalia. In my opinion, externalia are there for when the work itself has generated enough interest that there are questions that come up and can't easily be answered just upon the presentation of the work, despite the best efforts of the author and the viewer to interpret what's actually happening. If you are relying heavily on commentary to sell your work, consider first how you could make the commentary unnecessary by just incorporating it into the work on the best way possible. Remember that art of any kind is an expression of the artist's interpretation of given subject

I don't think something being common makes it the only way to properly do it. Like I said, that extra information can be useful and beneficial to the experience of the photo, but learn to have the photos work on their own before putting that stuff on top of it. I assume this is an Ansel Adams photo with his commentary on top? Clearly that man has done his work and put his thought into making the photograph itself work as best as it can, and he's elaborating on precisely how he accomplished that. The photo can speak for itself, and the commentary adds because of the strength of the photo itself

Ansel posts photo for gallery. It's called Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico 1941 - Gelatin silver print.
Ansel posts same photo in his book. He writes picrelated along.

Both approaches work. Both have a place. Both should be accepted for what they are.

I doubt OP is posting his commentary with the same awareness that Ansel wrote his. Obviously commentary has its place, but that part your missing is what I keep reiterating: that your photo should do that work above the commentary. I guess my complaint is that neither OP's photos nor his commentary are good enough for my tastes; I'm telling him to work on his photography before putting together a photobook and thread to sell it with commentary that says so little except "this is Baltic and abandoned and I went there". Deeper themes, if there are any, should be present in the photos, and I didn't notice any. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. Enlighten me if I haven't
