How do you get actual shots of the moon?

I am not scared to admit I am new.

I want to take moon photos.

What kinds of lenses? What kinds of filters / etc.

Please help a wanna be moon photo man.

I generally don't, it always looks the same.

I wanna play with it at twilight sometime so i can expose it properly relative to rest of the shot so i have detail in both, but I'm also a scatterbrained alcoholic and don't plan shoots well.

These are just dicking around with my bird lens, which is the g2 tammy 150-600.

I don't think it's particularly good for this purpose.

Have you considered looking into hooking a camera up to a telescope? I never have but a buddy of mine did a couple years ago and he seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

Moon is a darkish 0.5 degree diameter object in bright sunlight. For full moon high on cloudless sky try sunny 16 +1 stop for start and adjust from that. Lens. You likely can't find a tele long enough for moon to not fit in frame.

I don't have a tele lens yet. It's coming in a few days. For now I am stuck with the sony kit lens FE 4-5.6 / 28-60

Aright, well get a big tele, I'd recommend at least 600mm, and a tripod. You can get cheap mf chinese lenses on ebay. Good ones quickly approach new-car level prices.

Point lens at moon. Focus on moon. Read light meter. Adjust exposure.

Use a timer or remote shutter. take picture. Chimp. Adjust exposure again if needed. Congrats. You now have a picture of the moon.

Well, that's a composite for one. You won't be able to get an even exposure on the moon and the clouds like that.

Here's my secret. Don't tell anyone. Get your longest lens. A 200mm zoom is good. 400mm can be better. APS-C will get you more magnification of course. Shot raw. Jpg will do, but raw is better. Find moonrise times online or with a photography app. Wait until moonrise will occur after sunset but before complete darkness. Capture orange moon as it emerges from the ocean (or earth depending on where you are) against the deep blue sky. Really nice to get a silhouette of a small building or vegetation with moon behind. Good luck.

So this has to be multiple exposures, right? When the hell would the light naturally allow this?

Also, will automatic HDR in LR work for stuff like this or do ya need to get real fuckity?

No trickery, no HDR, no cropping. A7R3, 100-400mm + 1.4x converter. Island is 3.5 miles / 5.6 Km distant. Unfortunately, I didn't realize I had the camera set to jpg only.
