From what I understand, it's supposed to save energy and provide better visibility. But the white light is just really fucking awful. The yellow/orange color of HPS lights made nighttime photographs a lot more interesting.
Just my opinion.

Yes, just set highlights to any hue you want it to and you're set.

I fucking HATE the orange street lights. Makes me feel like I'm in a public housing complex. Green street lights are the best

White led lights provide a far more neutral pallet to color balance with. Sodium lamps taint everything in such a strong hue that it's hard to balance outside of that "soft orange" in the right image (and let's be honest, sodium vapor lamps never look that soft and nice; they are a very strong orange and rather ugly most of the time)

Yeah, they're ugly as fuck, and they actually destroy night vision. They're also really bad for people's sleep cycles. I've been raging about them for several years. I have a little bit of hope now since I've seen some LED lamps out there with a nice, warmer white. Almost a yellow-white like halogens. I think if those catch on everyone will be ok with them.

I used to dislike them but now that there's more of them I don't mind them. In my city they've also started doing this neat thing where the pedestrian crossings have stronger lights next to them, so it actually makes for a quite interesting and less monotonous look.

The only issue is that everything is a bit too bright, so there's more light pollution than before.

But even in that example those are balanced incredibly to the left/lower in Kelvin. Real high pressure sodium doesn't look that soft and nice.

This. Seeing the night sky at a site with no light pollution is incredible. But most people never will. If you look at a light pollution map of the US, there practically aren't any light pollution free areas in the eastern half. In the western half you often have to drive hours to one.

In case you are just stupid and not trolling: sodium lamps emit monochromatic light which means no color information except for the hue of the light source reaches the sensor.
You are essentially taking bw pictures with a tint and no amount of wb will fix this.

In case you are just stupid and not trolling: OP actually loves sodium lamps and hates white lamps. So really, warming up the white balance is perfectly valid for trying to approximate the sodium look if only white light is available.

Yes sorry, I misunderstood you. But white balance is still not the solution since it will ruin colors of other light sources, e.g. traffic lights, cars, the sky...

One of the major water crossings in my city just changed to white LEDs from sodium and it's remarkable how little light pollution is there now. Before you could see the bridge from miles away because it spilled ugly orange light everywhere. Now the light is properly directed onto the road surface without polluting the entire night sky. When you're driving the road is brighter and more visible and yet there's not a billion light sources just indiscriminately blasting light everywhere to make up for how shitty they are. It's strange ITT how people are dogging LED street lamps when in reality, quality ones with good designs and housings actually reduce light pollution and light areas better because of tighter control and direction.

At night I have to drive with the sun visor down now. The glare is blinding. It's worse than oncoming headlights. You'd think they'd be collectively smart enough to use better diffusion or some kind of shielding so the lamps on your side of the road are aimed in the direction of traffic. But they aren't.
