I've got a super 8 lying around that I want to shoot something with, but getting the film developed is pretty expensive considering a cassette of super 8 is like 3 minutes.
Funnily enough there is so little use of super 8 and 8mm that the costs are pretty similar to 16mm. So for anything more serious than travel videos it doesn't really make sense to go with super 8

I want to start shooting analog movies but am wondering what setup would be the most cost effective when it comes just to film cost, developing, and scanning, I can probably edit the movies on my own. Price of the movie camera itself is not a huge problem as long as the film/developing is the cheapest.

no but I have a few cameras. Kodak announced quite a few years ago that they were bringing back in house development and making a new camera but that never materialized.
I was waiting for that to happened so I could test out the cameras but now it looks like I never will.

The smart way to shoot analogue is to rent 16mm equipment. 16mm and Super 8 are basically the same in film and developing/digitization unless you do it yourself which takes pretty long until you get your moneys worth

How durable are super 8 cameras? I found one in a thrift shop for 20 bucks but I wasn't familiar enough to know if it was ok working condition. I wound the crank and it started turning and making a grinding noise. It had 3 interchangeable lenses too.

That's an 8mm, not super 8, takes different film. If it runs the film it's probably working. Those cameras usually have manual exposure.

110 is basically Micro Four Thirds in film form.
I think the closest it gets is Minox 8x11mm, but even that is bigger. 8mm is the width with sprockets and 8mm film runs vertically. Frame size is 4.5mm x 3.3mm for regular 8 and 5.79mm x 4.01mm for super8.
