All art pales in comparison to music. No one cares about photography, it can't convey emotion like other music or literature or touch the deepest part of our subjectivity. And there are too many photographs already in the world(3.2 billion images are being shared everyday on internet), it feels like everyone is a photographer these days, everything has been photographed to the point of absurdity and meaninglessness. So we should stop doing photography. No one gives a fuck about anyone's snapshits except his own, i mean people don't give a single shit about most famous and critically acclaimed photographers, 98% of so called photographers don't know the abc of photography's art history so what are you struggling towards? Recognition? Few dopamine hits? Immortality through art? Why are you're taking these photographs? And for whom? Don't say yourself because you share them on internet to get (You)s but when thread will be over or when someone will scroll past your photo on instagram, after looking at it for 2 seconds it will be forgotten and lost in the gutters of internet.

When it's something fresh and unique. I guess some unusual weather/lighting/location/angle/focal length. Most landscape photography is just wide angle with something in the foreground and sunrise/sunset. It's super formulaic.

They miss the forest for the trees. Speaking of that:

Buy nice camera gear if you can afford it. Safely ignore all the jealous or jaded people who tell you that you should get a "starter camera" that's got terrible build quality and limited functionality until you've passed some arbitrary milestone in order to justify it, like making money with paid gigs or even just being "good enough". I mean, if you personally don't want to spend a lot of money, that's totally fine, but don't get yourself talked out of nicer camera gear either; the important thing is that you get whatever gear YOU want, because you're the one using it, not bitter losers on the internet.

I find the opinions of non-photographers far more valuable than those of so-called critics. I will listen to the opinions of other photographers who I know and respect and who work in the same fields as myself.

At that point, any camera is "a nice camera" because it's better than no camera at all, and you can figure out from there what you actually want from your camera or whether you even want to continue with photography. Depends on the person. For some people it's fine to get an entry level camera. Others however will quickly "grow out" of it and want something better. Makes more sense to buy once and cry once, what helps is actually learning about cameras and their functions so you can figure out what you really want instead of just buying the cheapest thing you can.

Agreed, creating a personal vision is much more open-ended in the digital realm which makes it much more difficult and shows off the artist's skills and style better. Digital photography rewards users with a good eye because what you see is what you get generally and that's your baseline to work with. Film photography is more like a safety net. You can basically squeeze water from a stone just by virtue of the pre-baked color choices and certain artifacts of the medium.

Yeah, I just got back into digital after a bout of shooting film only. Film was fun, but I kept kicking myself weeks later when I scanned the negatives, when I realized all my mistakes. Which I would repeat over and over again because I would have forgotten about it the next time. With digital's quick turnaround I can often just go out to the same place the next day and get a do-over.

I'm definitely getting back into film later, but not exclusively, and only after I've gotten better at shooting pictures that stand on their own merit.

"Getting an image right in camera" is not some sort of 'pure' photography, it's applicable solely to shooting slide film for direct projection.

For all negative photography and all digital photography, processing developing and printing (and their digital equivalents) are as fundamental part of the process as the initial light capture.

photography is a subtractive art, you can only control the figure ground by taking away objects. Bokeh is just a convenient way (which is why it's so overused) to reduce background noise of a non-distracting ground

Isn't that what they always called it? I have Ansel Adam's The Camera right here on my desk, there's a chapter there called "Small Format Cameras".

In the context of film 35mm is indeed on the small end of still photography formats. It's objectively smaller than medium format and large format.

On the other hand, in a digital context it would actually make more sense to call full frame digital "medium format", since it is indeed the happy medium of the bunch. Although that might be just me trying to make myself feel better about shooting APS-C.

That iso 10 argument is fully retarded, in the same time I could take 5 iso 160 shots, stack them and rescale down and have an insanely sharp image with 2+ extra stops of dynamic range\snr over a single iso 160 digital photo.

The whole point of using one exposure is that not everything is going to sit still while you fuck around stacking or doing long exposures on a tripod. And you could also do stacking on digital so this really isn't an argument either.

You're probably right. I have had so many friends fail to make a competitive or comparable choice for stupid reasons over the years. Money is almost sensible, spending the same amount of money on dumb shit and gimmicks instead of a half decent used camera wasn't. But I'm an old head who has watched the trends come and go, know what I want, and stopped giving a fuck about the rest pretty early into the digital era. We, my cohort of "professionals" of varying degrees over 40, have owned or rented just about everything and seem to favor darkroom art prints or some kind of compact mirrorless about the size of the film cameras we grew up with. Anything you can see and autofocus most of the time in bad light usually goes over well. That's probably your bare minimum right there. The big bodies and lenses were half show, half tax write off.

If you're ever out on the trails or doing some sightseeing, the old farts with new fujis and olympuses are pros who got out of the declining industry and sold their work gear. The rest are amateurs and sports photographers outside their element. To the point, whatever rickety old shits with bad backs are using is usually more than adequate and not terribly expensive. Light and discrete is what gets the best photos.

Nah, everyone else just has primes or the kit zoom they'd rather carry. The footlong dong is the first thing to go to finance a new kit. That leaves enthusiasts who have to have "the best" and sportsfags who can't get rid of it. For whatever reason, the first thing you do after you get out of the game is flip the Beast for a dippy retro crop and a fast prime. Or go pentax because you have a stable of vintage lenses. A lot of us feel like we did our best work when it felt more like "fun" than "work" and a 5D with a superzoom is tied to memories of weddings and covering shitty events out in bumfuck.

My buddies have a little running competition to see who has the most understated kit. Laying it all out on the table and comparing results keeps you honest.

Bokeh is crutch most of the time

I have a d610 and it takes great shots. The only camera I would consider replacing it with is d850. Mirrorless is dumb since I only use manual focus lenses which work so well on the d6xx, d7xx, and d8xx. The battery life also sucks.

Eh, for shooting sure. Its not enough to DSLR scan film. Ektar and provia are slightly more than 24mp. I'd also be nice to be able to scan 4x5 which is easily 100mp or higher.

Strongly disagree, but I will admit that most modern landscape photography is shit since its usually artificially fucked with. b/w landscapes are unbelievably based.
Hot takes:

Unless you are using a custom focusing screen the manual focusing in ML cameras is superior, and that's one of the few real advantages they have.
This obviously gets countered with viewfinder lag and eye strain so there's that, maybe in 5 more years they will get better.

Plus for mirrorless manual focus you can adapt all sorts of vintage lenses, lenses from other brands, and lenses from Asian lens companies (ttartisan, samyang, 7artisans, mitakon etc). Then you can get focus peaking/magnification and IBIS with them. It's clearly the superior system for manual focusing.

Maybe, but my hot take on that is that 90% of the time, subject matter is not a valid thing to critique. In my mind, it's rare to find a "bad" subject, as long as you have a good execution of your photo of it
