AE-1 isn't bad, but I believe anon is saying that one of the auto slrs with a program mode is a better deal at this time. I disagree if you want to learn to use manual photography tricks, but it's a fine way to start and most are half manual. Lenses make the camera so whatever has the cleanest examples of somewhat cheap lenses is best. Hence Nikon or the current Canon mount. A Pentax mx or similar is also fine. Bear in mind they're all old and most have never been serviced and almost every single one of mine has broken in some way.

It looks like the owner tried to remove the lens in order to spray it down, but the inner bezel was unable to apply torque to remove the outer barrel. This is going to require making slots on the lens barrel for our spanner. You will need the following tools.

Aaand I fucked it. It's bookshelf sculpture now. Maybe next time. I'm also pretty sure one of the springs exploded again and it was already cooked. They don't usually work fine and then suddenly not over a sticky shutter.

Not like that lens isn't a rotted out fungus trap that cleaning merely made slightly less blurry. Still in for less than those filters including tools so I feel little to nothing.

Jupiter-12 and Jupeiter-9 set from Russian ebay, both supposedly CLAs. The 12 is fine, but the 9... It may or may not have been Cleaned and Adjusted, but they were sure to Lubricate the fuck out of every surface they could get their hands on. Every square mm of the aperture blades are soaked with oil (still move fine, at least), and it's leaking down the helicoid and out of the fucking mounting threads.

It was pretty clear in the center and both lenses were miraculously synchronized after I put it back together, but there were other issues. I never shot color through it but the coating was half gone throughout the whole stack.

It was a wonderful project camera and taught me a lot, I could easily run a large format rig and not fuck up too bad at this point. They're designed to get sprayed out with contact cleaner every six months and timing a Compur is easy as pie.

I bought supaa exerent+++, some separation and there's a tea stain around the edges of the lens group. All I really had to do was replace all the foam. We'll see how it looks in color, can't see it in black and white. Professional studio cameras are fun, at least whatever nip asshole had mine kept in good order barring it looking like he beat a hooker to death with it.

So I got an enlarger on ebay.

Only problem is, I'm getting it shipped from england to burgerland. So It's designed to work with crazy british plugs.

The power supply is 240v to 12v. American outlets are 120v. Can I just use one of those $50 step-up transformers from home depot+a plug converter?

I don't think the 50hz frequency diff is going to matter cuz there are no motors or anything.

If there is no electronics but a switch, fuse and a light bulb, you likely could just order a 120V rated replacement bulb or two and change the plug / use adapter. However a 120V bulb of same wattage uses 2 x Amps compared to 240V bulb so wiring, switch and fuse needs to handle that. If it blows the fuse or catches fire you should have used a transformer instead.

Mamiya 6 is like 2500, Mamiya 7 is like 3000-4000. Save up a little more and get the better format that gives you the option to crop to square. It's better to buy the 7 than to buy the square format version you'll eventuall get tired of the square format and want the 6x7 ????? How doesn't that make sense you mouthbreathing fuck. Some times it amazes me how you have to spoonfeed some of you common sense train of thoughts.

It's a little much unless you're burning through rolls for coverage and alternate shots, say for a project.

If it's anything like the durst m601, it's a light socket with a cord and switch attached. You need a transformer anyway to run the halogen bulb. OR you stick in a self ballasted LED that pulls 2 watts, puts out more light and almost no heat, and fires up instantly.

a compact rangefinder that shoots something crazy like super 8 would be pretty neat. you wouldn't save any money though. i think 100' of super8 and something like 35mm hp5 is the fucking same. shooting film must cost like $50/minute.

Not quite because the original exposure won't have as much shadow detail and pushing doesn't affect the shadows much. If you shot it at 1600 for instance and pushed 3 stops the highlights/midtones would benefit from the push, but the shadows stay about the same, which is why the overall contrast goes up.

Foma over-rates their film. The 400 is actually somewhere between 250 and 320 which is why people complain about it being a grainy and high-contrast film because if you shoot a box speed you're pushing from the get-go.

Pushing and pulling in development creates higher and lower contrast, but 'pulling' AKA overexposing when taking the shot is more about making sure the shadows get enough information.

Really depends on the film. 3200iso b&w? Not very large. 50iso color negative? Prolly 24 inches or even bigger.

For an extreme example, Adox says this film https://www.adox.de/Photo/films/cms20ii-en/ can be printed up to 2.5m diagonal because if you develop it right, it resolves an absolutely absurd 800 line pairs/mm which equals about 500 megapickles.

There aren't any with "modern" - i.e. not a 3/4 element Tessar - lenses.
In the heyday of 6x6 cameras (50's to 70's), RFs were a dying breed for professional use, virtually all 6x6 cameras had a mirror (TLR or SLR).

If you don't mind a fixed lens camera with a Tessar, check the Iskra 6x6 (Soviet but good quality, especially the lens) or the Agfa Super Isolette series.

Status report:
Trip to mountains w/ waterfall and covered bridge on iternetary was a success. Mr. Mamiyagi weighted down the trunk quite nicely on the mountain passes, failing to roll. My companion used my Olympus, deleting most of the snapshits upon reflection upon returning. I used her flexaret vi to shoot a roll of 400h. The burger, by all descriptions should have been delicious but was found to be lacking, a cold edible from the home fridge proves more satisfying. Rolleicord replacement arrived while out, in much better condition than the original on initial inspection. Shutter knob is merely bent instead of missing and infinity focus shows signs of adjustment. Autocordfags on suicide watch. Focus is in question, shutter speed tests forthcoming beforehand. Spend at least 180 bux on any worthwhile budget tlr is my initial impression.

LED is new territory for film dev, the rest I naturally assumed as I bought it for the color head (not pictured because it doesn't fucking work for reasons mentioned) so I wouldn't have to fuck with contrast filters and you didn't post a temperature controlled sink setup. Color film development is a nightmare, the way an enlarger is a nightmare for everyone but like 4 of us and a namefag.

It still looks better at 200% zoom than regular BW stock at 100%, I would have zero problems printing 5300 dpi scans at 1,5 meters wide, because of the lsck of grain itll look just as good. You can sharpen the hell out of it too. But also makes enlarging very difficult since theres no grain to focus.

Interestingly, I still think PanF 50 "feels" sharper as actual photos, CMS 20 just enlarges really well.

Nah they have two ranges, one range is with contacts and takes separate accessories, the other range is without contacts and just mounts on physically.

You can also just use an artifact of choice and a measuring tape. With a big ol' focusing screen, you shouldn't have to take a picture to confirm that focus happens when the lens scale says it should.

Very easy. Like the anon said, sous vide circulstor makes it very easy.if youvdont have that, heat up a water bath to around 2x as hot as your dev temp and let it cool down to where you want it. The temp should keep stable enough for a dev.

It's easy but also a pain in the ass...especially compared to how little time/effort and forward planning developing bw takes. I can decide to develop some rolls of bw and have them hung to dry 20 minutes later and not be worried about chemical shelf life. With color, it takes about an hour to do a single round after accounting for heating up chems.

So ya, it's not harder but it's not as spur of the moment, easy going as bw is.

I've got one, wanted one to figure out how much I should shim my printing surface because the enlarger is autocalibrating for the lens it came with, but can't use it for the bloody life of me. I just see a blurry bright spot in there. No use at all. Prints come out as well as you'd expect given the low-fi Soviet enlarger (albeit an export model), so haven't really needed it either.

Months, no problem. This is how I've been doing it for the past 5 years of doing my own color dev. I build a backlog of rolls and then crush them in one go...but not going to lie, it's become a real drag doing this. Waiting so long between shooting and reviewing just makes me so apathetic to the whole process...especially since developing 12+ rolls in a single sitting is extremely monotonous. 3+ hours of agitating every 15s is a terrible way to spend an afternoon.

Exposed film degrades after a while. I've never found a clear answer on how long, but I know monochrome starts going off within a year. Building a dip tank for multiple reels could be overkill or exactly what you need. Something you can load and use all the developer in one go.

I know the focus is off, it's reading 3 feet at 4 feet and infinity is completely wrong and not hitting the stop where it should. I'm shooting a roll to see if the lenses are at least synched and don't have astigmatism. How much is a CLA these days? I already have most of the tools to do it but thankfully the focus was dead on balls accurate the last time around. G*rman engineering drives a man to drink and synchronizing two lenses without an optical bench and the variety of shims needed, while using homemade ground glass---I don't know if I have the fortitude. Get a big plastic box (e.g. Ikea). Put a cheap sous-vide machine in it. Float chemical bottles and dev tank in water in box at required temperature. Put tank-turning aliexpress thing upside-down over tank (so that bouyancy is pushing it up into the rollers rather than gravity pulling it down onto them).
You now have a cheap, temperature controlled, agitation controlled dev system. You still need to pour them chemicals yourself but the rest is automated.

Ive actually been thining about making an automatic dip tank I can control from my phone with one of those smart blinds for windows from ikea or wherever. Costs around 100 bucks, and its pretty much ready out of the box. You can set them to rise and fall automatically at different intervals with an app. I'm thinking setting it inside a light sealed cabinet with a letterbox shaped tank to dip into.

Make it detachable and you can also use it as actual blinds too.

Mamiya lenses love the fungus m8, this is standard, but the upside is they are so easy to service. honestly order a lens spanner off ebay and pull it apart to clean, hopefully the coatings aren't too badly etched. I bought a whole kit off a dude with like 6 lenses, every one had fungus like this, spent an afternoon dismantling, cleaning and putting it back and now they're mint. Turned an $800 kit into a $3000 one with a $10 lens spanner and about the same in optic wipes.

They will be referring to stand development, where you agitate for 1 min, then leave it alone for ~59min.

There's a lot of info out there about stand development and the pros and cons but the tl;dr is you get finer grain, lower contrast and under/overexposed shots tend to even out.

Although if you get good results from longer normal development with 1:100 then that's totally fine as well, with the bonus of using less developer.

The 80:20 rule is in effect. No one actually knows how rodinal stand development works, but 80% of the development is finished in the first few minutes and the rest is believed to be a process involving the metabisulfite and a mostly exhausted catalyst that does what anon says. You won't notice a difference unless you compare with standard development and have a lot of photos with high contrast and questionable exposures.

That one's soft and shaky so assuming your lens is fine, you need a tripod, an aperture ideally between f/8 and f/16, and to use the scale on the lens to put infinity within the focal range of your f/stop and make sure your subject is also in that range. That clears up most problems and keeps the background in focus. If you don't have a tripod, git gud at holding steady and not shaking the camera when you hit the shutter button.

35mm film was originally made for motion pictures. The first 35mm cameras had to be loaded with bulk film in a darkroom. Leica introduced the refillable 35mm cassette, and the Kodak invented the disposable 35mm cartridge. The sprocket holes intended for motion picture cameras made film take-up and advance easier than with medium format.
70mm motion picture film has sprockets, but the format was never widely adopted for still cameras. The US space program used to use Hasselblads with 70mm film backs.

The Pentax K1000 is a nice solid camera. I haven't been around a hi-matic but having a point and shoot is great because you can take it with you easily. Looks like you've got some good cameras. Consumer film is pretty stable, it might not be perfect but it's only a couple years expired, people shoot film that's way older anyway. I'd just shoot it and see what it's like. It's free film, after all.

Go ahead, zoom in on where the foliage overlaps the sky and you'll see the pixelation I mean. I don't know what could exactly cause it, but it's there. maybe the color bit depth is too low? I have no idea.

Those are both excellent within reason and the film will be a little off but mostly fine. Pentax lenses are something special and there aren't many bad vintage ones on that mount. You can also get an m42 adapter for a dollar and use old Soviet glass.

No it's not. There were FSU lenses hand-fitted to a certain FED/Zorki body, but those are rare in and of themselves, and you'll know you have one from also likely having the corresponding body. Otherwise LTM = m39 thread with RF coupling. There are also m39 thread-mounted lenses for certain early FSU SLRs, and those are both for a SLR's flange-to-focal distance and don't have a RF coupling.

What do you guys clean the outside of your cameras with? I usually use a microfiber cloth that’s a little damp but sometimes a wet wipe just because it gets so dirty/greasy.

you just answered your own question. I use compressed air from a distance on the outside of the camera. I use an air rocket on the lens close up for any debris that might be stuck there. Only then do I attempt to clean with a wet wipe that's good for coated lenses.

LTM/L39/Leics Screw = 39mm diameter thread mount with Whitworth microscope threads, for rangefinders (Leice, Fed/Zorki, etc). Pre-war Soviet cameras had a slightly different flange focal distance, post-war cameras matched Leica's FFD.

M39 = 39mm diameter mount used for some soviet SLRs. Completely different flange focal distance, lenses are not interchangeable with L39.

I got my hands on a plastic lens hood for my canon 50mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 but as with most plastic lens hoods it doesn't really stay in place all that well. Is there any trick with which I can improve this? The "threading" is probably also a bit loose.

Were you doing twist agitation or what? The first time I developed I didn't get problems like this, I did twist agitation and inverted the tank a couple times as well. I had no development problems, although I did have light leaks from the camera.

Praktica MTL3 or MTL 5 or MTL5b or MTL50 are my favorite beginner film cameras.
Fully mechanical, M42 mount, absurdly reliable.
A good one goes for around 50 with a Pentacon 50mm f1.8 lens.

no. shutter sticking would have less exposure around the edges (not more) and would probably be inconsistent across frames

im using the twister stick, yea. continuous agitation for the first minute, and then 6 or so seconds once a minute thereafter. i wonder if this is too much agitation? i can't imagine it creating this effect though

Well that depends on how well the battery compartment is sealed off. In my computor ii they get drained really really fast. Probably also because I use a fidgety setup with tinfoil and rubber... In my ftb they last a very long time. I also don't need to do any tweeks for my ftb because the battery compartment cover pressed the wein cell snuggly against the battery terminal. Wein cells are also really cheap so...

The only thing I can think of would be that the twist agitation somehow caused it. It looks like the edges near the sprocket holes were developed more compared to the middle. My explanation might be that if you only did twist agitation, well, the film is moving back and forth, probably not up and down depending on the exact design of your tank. Some tanks have cams that will agitate the film reels up and down as you rotate, some don't.

I think that turbulence caused by the sprocket holes moving through the developer solution caused developer to be replenished faster near the sprocket holes of the film, and the film in the middle didn't get this effect as much. I'm not sure but this would be my guess, and I would also guess that if you simply added an inversion or two to your developing process, you wouldn't have this issue.

Shutters can leak light, too. A shutter that does not fully seat at one end of travel (or hangs up at end of travel) could easily cause partial overexposure.

There's no magic to them. You lose some EV (e.g. 1 stop with a 1.4x converter, 2 stops for a 2x, etc) and the effective MTF of the lens is reduced (because you're blowing up a small patch of the image circle to cover the whole film/sensor). TANSTAAFL applies.

For FD specifically, there are plenty of 100mm range FD lenses to be had for the cost of a teleconverter, and of roughly the same size, which will give a superior image to a 2x converted 50mm (100mm f2.8 eqiv.).

if the chemicals were old, i don't see why this would happen. if elements in the chemical floated to the bottom between actuations, you wouldn't see this band it would be more like a gradient. i don't understand how acutation would cause this, but im at a loss as to what else it could be.

Guys, I just bought a Noblex. The big one. I know I'm a dum dum but Ive been looking for a panoramic system for years. I cropping 6x9 frames, 6x12 backs on a 4x5, but neither felt dramatic in the way swing lens cameras do. Also, the ability to shoot what is essentially large format size handheld seems neat. Not that Im gonna do it very much. And yes, I admit, I wanted a camera that makes photos look different than others. All conventional systems make photos still look the same regardless of frame size and Ive got plenty of MF systems with conventional optics already.

Anyone have any experience with a swing scan system?

Have people here used State Film Lab? Their digital contact sheets look good, so I think I will go with them.

Is it worthwhile to pay more for 6500×4250 resolution instead of 3000×2000?
Would it also be worthwhile to pay more for tonality corrections or is that what everyone just does in lightroom?

Even if they were old they'd be shaken up once you pour them into the tank. I really can't come up with anything other than turbulence caused by the sprocket holes, but the guy said his tank has those cams that are supposed to move the reels up and down as you twist. Which should fix this problem, but who knows.

Don’t pay for any lab corrections but do pay for the higher quality scans. Unless you just have like 3 point and shoot rolls of friends you just wanna put up on Instagram, then the cheaper scans are fine.
