Do you ever just take unposed photos of your loved ones doing everyday things so you'll have something to remember them by in sixty years?

I do that with family and frens, my main photo genre actually. They didn't get it at first, after seeing their pictures and the memories they bring back, they love them.

You should ask your friends and family to pose. You aren't fucking Robert Frank doing some hot photojournalim shit. There isn't anything deceitful or untrue about a pose, and it gives people a chance to look their best, instead of some gape-mouthed cretin caught in their most unflattering moment.

No, not at all mad. I've just seen many photographers try to do their "candid friends and family" phase and it's almost always a mistake. The pictures end up unflattering, and while they might hold some emotional value to you (in no small part due to your own pride in your work and growth as an "artist"), they can be a real source of pain for other people. And 9 times out of 10, people are sneaking photos because they're too shy and awkward to just ask people to fucking strike a pose.

Ironically, if you are interested in taking photos of people, learning to pose and direct is a far, far greater skill than pretending you're playing Pokemon snap.

I don't really feel a close connection to any friends or family, so no. I do feel a "connection" to the places I go to shoot, alone, when there's nobody else in the frame and I'm just taking in whatever environment I'm in (usually urban), whether it's ordinary or somewhat special. Call me autistic, a loner, incel etc. I honestly don't care anymore.

i feel like less people are doing this - or at least keeping the results - with the onset of cellphone photography/digital filters. it's definitely a great medium though. when i have kids some day i want to buy an old film or vhs camera to photograph my family doing whatever.

Get your photos printed and put them in a photo album. GET YOUR PHOTOS PRINTED AND PUT THEM IN A PHOTO ALBUM. 5X7 prints are insanely cheap on Amazon (58 CENTS per photo) and nobody is going to go digging through your 90GB of raw files if you get hit by a bus tomorrow.

Yeah but are they remotely good enough quality? Printing a photo is a process. Colors look different on different paper and require editing. So does overall brightness. Also, most people shoot in 2x3, so they'd have to crop to get to 5x7.
