How do I stop being a nophoto???
Not even talking about street photography or getting in people's faces. Something about holding a camera in public terrifies me. How do I stop giving a fuck???

Have a friend with you who is more outgoing, it usually rubs off.
Go for a beer, just one or two. Don't let it become a crutch but there is nothing wrong with having a sociable drink to loosen up.
Start taking easy photos, like peoples backs, far away shots etc. It will ease you into it.
Just remember that the people who see you outside will forget you exist almost as soon as you leave their sight, they will never think about you ever again in their entire life.

Last but not least dress as dick skelington.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Bonus points if you have a dippy film camera and tell randoms you don't even know if it's going to work. As long as you're not the faggot at the party with a guitar instead of a personality, you can be an introverted shut in AND a schizo creative who doesn't give a fuck. A nice shirt and some kind of lanyard that looks official makes for an effective placebo until you eventually nut up. Also a poorly concealed gun if you're American and hanging money around your neck.

If you're like me, it's a long process that comes with exposure and age. Otherwise, go out in the wilderness and shoot some landscape with no one around until you come back forget you're back in the agora.

Unless you're photographing something like federal buildings or military stuff while looking shady, no one will care or bother you.

1. Go to the busiest, most crowded corner of your town. Preferably during evening rush hour when it is getting dark.

2. Tighten the old sphincter and set up your tripod on the corner right there in everybody's way.

3. Notice how everyone goes around you. One or two might scowl but most people just put up with it.

4.Once in a blue moon someone might ask what the fuck you think you're doing. In that situation you give them a withering look and say "Art" in a tone that is carries with it the unspoken, "but you wouldn't understand that".

5. Watch them melt back meekly into the throng

6. Your problem is now solved. You can be a meek and timid manlet for the rest of your life but once you get that camera between you and the world you will be fearless.

Same here. Even if I find something I want to take a photo of, I'm usually to spooked by the idea of people seeing me, that I end up not doing anything. Spent 6 hours wandering around in cologne and didn't take a single photo.

I've been doing a bit of "Street photography"™ two years ago. I found that each time I ventured out I got more and more daring. I then didn't go out and take photos for a few weeks and I was just as insecure as before when I started again. So my advice is basically what the other anon said in his first paragraph: Get out there and start off by taking photos you're comfortable with. They probably won't blow your mind but if you actually managed to take a photo in public that's a win. You'll see that the more often you use your camera in public for ANY reason the more comfortable you'll be. I still have to get back into it - it's not easy but I think you can do it!

Also: Maybe try taking photos of your friends in public. People will see and acknowledge that you're just taking pictures of your friends and will leave you alone, all the while you get more confident to use your camera out in the open.

That's how you get what you want to shoot. Look like you belong there. Bring a friend, preferably doing the same thing. Shoot americana and pass the camera around. P mode is Pro mode.

same, i'm trying to take my camera out more just to get comfortable taking it out even if I dont take any photos. but just being seen with it fills me with anxious dread. I just dont want a confrontation or to become a target for the beggars who plague my town. For instance, I went out on wednesday, stopped for a sandwich and wanted to take a photo of the church through the window, but chickened out cause I felt awkward being seen taking the photo.

This level of anxiety isn't normal. Use the tips above but honestly you might need to go talk to someone about it if it's impacting you that much.
When I was 20 till about 26 I was riddled with anxiety. That's when I developed an alcohol dependency to cope with it, which in turn made it worse. After going to an alcoholics community support thing and started talking I lost my anxiety, never stopped drinking, but just being open about my fears and shit really helped.

Realize that nobody cares about what you're doing and that after they stop interacting with you they're gonna forget about ever seeing you even if you did something extremely stupid like shit yourself or fall down and piss in your own mouth (though they might talk about it for the rest of the day).
Do this, go and ask your friends the last time they saw a photographer doing their thing. They're gonna say "idk lol i forget" even though everyone has walked by at least 1 or 2 people (tourists or professionals at a wedding ect) snapping pics.

Having a camera just makes you seem interesting, if people say anything it's usually just "oh cool you're a photographer? What kind of camera is that?" If you're scared of street photography just set up a shot and wait for someone to walk into it. You could bring a backpack in case you're not feeling it and want to put it away
