According to the specs it's 1/200s.
Flash sync with electronic shutter is 1/200s on the A1 and 1/180s on the R3 so that seems in line with other cameras.

True, but it should be a lot higher if camera had global shutter. So no global shutter, but fast read out speeds. It will still have banding, light artefacts and rolling shutter defects.

It is obviously not global shutter because we're simply not there yet. It is something very close, closer than any other manufacturer. So much that rolling shutter effect is almost non existent, it can be seen in Kai's review.

And yet OMDS's rumoured new "wow camera" is basically an E-M1X with a stacked global shutter.

It's kind of hilarious that despite everything, the small sensor seems to not suffer from the same problems as these big flagships.

I'm seriously baffled why more people are not shitting on this bullshit. When Canon brought plastic mount on 6d ii, it was rightfully shat on. Now there's no plastic mount on any of their mirrorless cams. We need to make a stand on this. Mechanical shutter is 50$ piece on mirrorless bodies. That they're so cheap to pull it out on a flagship that costs 5.000$ is preposterous. If nothing is done, we'll soon be stuck with ele shutter on slow read sensors on entry and mid tier bodies that will still cost 1.000$

If you ask me, the Z9, along with the R3 and A1/A9 are really only unbeatable if you need high res shots in a dark indoor sports venue when you need to use stupid high ISO values like 20000.

I fully accept and agree that the micro four thirds sensors basically perform like crap above ISO 6400 (except for the GH5S/BGH1 with their dual gain 10mp sensors). But I still have to ask the question - who, apart from sports photographers, really uses stupid high ISOs all the time?

I mean... I shoot film, and the highest ISO film you get is 800 - sure you can push to higher speeds, but the image quality can fall apart pretty badly pretty quickly.

Sensors are ICs, IC cost scales with area (and probably with a power law rather than straight linear).

The A1/A9 and R3 still have mechanical shutters. Just because they're there doesn't mean that you must use it all the time.
Mechanical shutters enable the use of a wider variety of flash systems and even permit the use of manual flash (if you're a masochist who loves that stuff).

Mechanical shutter also may be valuable in certain contexts too. Say... you're taking a lot of shots of aeroplanes and helicopters - e shutter can cause a lot of strange artifacting (unless it's global shutter). Mechanical shutter will at least eliminate artifacting resulting from the sensor being read from top to bottom.

At the very least be thankful that modern cameras make use of a shutter that's thin, light and capable of achieving at least 1/8000 speeds.
We're not using cloth left to right curtain shutters anymore that top out at 1/1000 or 1/2000 on premium bodies.

I get that in plenty of situations, the e-shutter is good enough. If you're the sort of person who finds a camera like the Sigma fp appealing for being the form factor of a film compact camera from the 90s, but still with the 35mm format and an ILC, the lack of mechanical shutter probably doesn't phase you since you'll probably want to use the camera for travel, still life and landscape photography.

Idk what country you're from, but most mainstream sports I can think of are outdoors.
Motorsports, cycling, tennis, football (American & soccer), baseball, cricket, track & field athletics, golf, skiing, bobsleigh, sailing, rugby, field hockey, skating, equestrian, rowing....

The major indoor sports that come to mind are really... basketball, badminton, volleyball, handball, gymnastics, swimming, diving, ice hockey, martial arts, skating (figure and speed), curling and uh.... table tennis...

Like, even when it comes to major sports, I can only think of NBA and NHL being indoors. F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, NFL, Premier League, Bundesliga, MLB, IPL, etc. all take place outdoors, or at the very least in massive floodlit stadia that are about as bright as regular daylight conditions.

Small sensors have different problems. I'm sure we all know about those (worse noise, worse bokeh, earlier diffraction...).

On the upside they're easier to stabilize and you can implement a global shutter or even faster readout much easier.
Let's not even talk about readout speed on medium format.

Stop being a zealot about it and accept that there is no one true sensor better than all others at everything.

Do you also set iso and white balance for every single shot manually?
Hint: choosing the "daylight" preset doesn't count, that's just a hardcoded Kelvin number the manufacturer chose and thus automated.

You need to enter the kelvin number yourself or calibrate with a grey card.

EVF lifespan has surprisingly little documentation for some reason, LCD is said to last 60k hours and pro bodies' sensors have been known to shoot with only a small bunch of burned pixels well into the 2 million and half mark so whatever comes first.

When you use a digital camera the image sensor has to be read out anyway. A mechanical shutter doesn't change the readout speed of the sensor. It was just a small hurdle, until now, to use the sensor without a mechanical shutter. There won't be any digital cameras with mechanical shutters in the future.

The mechanical shutter doesn't do anything to readout the image sensor. It's just some flaps that cover the sensor during exposure. A mechanical shutter is not needed.

Any mechanical shutter operating above its X-sync speed will show rolling shutter effects. The term predates the existence of digital sensors, after all. The degree to which any non-global shutter shows rolling shutter artefacts (regardless of film/sensor) depends on the physical velocity of the front and rear shutter curtains. This is how you can have a camera with really bad rolling shutter at high film speeds (slow front and rear curtains exposing a lazily transiting strip of film/sensor) or a camera with very little rolling shutter at low speeds (fast front and rear curtain cover and uncover film/sensor rapidly).

Global synchronous sensor readout will eliminate rolling shutter for electronic shutter cameras, but that's easier said than done. The challenge of cramming that readout and buffering circuitry onto the sensor along with all the actual sensor circuitry on there already is why global shutter sensors are so absurdly expensive.

The D9's fast scanout sensor with backside bonded RAM is no less vulnerable to rolling shutter artefacts than other sensors using the same layout (e.g. the a9, and RX100 after the IV, etc).

It's just simple tech that Sony is holding back. Global shutter sensors are already on the market for cinema and for smaller sensors. Nikon was either too cheap to buy into it, or Sony didn't give it to them. I guess they have a nice cinema camera now, unless it overheats or has some other defect. It's just shit photo camera with rolling shutter.

And for prices above the Z9's retail price, just for the sensor alone.
Global shutter sensors are sufficiently expensive that many cinema cameras (e.g. RED) try and avoid using them. It's not as simple as just stacking RAM on the backside of the sensor die for fast scanout, the entire sensor readout architecture needs to change significantly in order to synchronously read out all pixels simultaneously. A global-shutter CMOS sensor and a rolling scanout CMOS sensor are as different at a silicon level as a CMOS and CCD sensor.

Please tell me how many instances of broken LCD you've encountered and in how many of those the camera was still considered functional by the user and not either repaired (if expensive) or trashed, because well it's basically useless without menus etc.

I was curious about the actual speed of mechanical shutters and it seems that it's not the easiest information to find.

I found Jim Kasson's blog who measured a bunch of cameras and he measured the following:
D850: 2.4ms
A7III: 3.4ms
A9: 3.5ms
GFX-50S: 4.5ms
There was also someone on dpreview who measured the S1 at 2.4ms.

Ignoring acceleration/deceleration effects, you can use the X-sync speed to figure out curtain travel time: X-sync is when the first curtain opens and the second curtain closes immediately after the first fully opens, so X-sync speed is the curtain travel time. Pick any spot on the focal plane, and the exposure time is the time between the first curtain uncovering and the second curtain covering. Consider this for a spot at the very bottom of the frame or the very top of the frame, and you'll understand how that is determined by shutter travel time.
