I don't have anything to contribute but this is really cool. Photos like this always make me want to build a model railroad even though I'm not that interested in trains, I just think it'd be cool to recreate scenes like that and then be able to take pictures of them.

I really like this, and I know it's from the late 60s but it really feels like a 50s photo. What causes that? The film stock, how it's developed? Artistic choices the photographer made? Specifically the tonality in the concrete and the train is just beautiful, and the colors of course.

I can't explain it either, it's just something you want to fall into. The funny thing is that some of these photos show the deep similarities between Appalachia and... Eastern Europe. This one in particular has had multiple people guess Russia before Appalachia. I'm not sure why, but I guess growing up in it makes it easier to identify.

I asked the photographer. He said Kodak color negative film, so likely Kodak 200 or 400 is all it was.

That's what 90% of Appalachia looks like. You get 2 weeks where you can get a nice landscape photo with some variety in the foreground.

PA is full of semi abandoned to active coal towns to choose from, shouldn't be too hard to find what you're looking for. Just get out there.

DC folk are the scourge of WV, VA, MD, and even NC. I thought you might be one from /out/ who likes to be spoonfed secluded locations
