MF it is more common because of film holder designs. If film is allowed to sit in a Hasselblad type back (or almost every MF SLR) it can kink where it passes over the rollers, and you can get a bar of soft focus in the middle of your frame. Rollei addressed this with their SLX and 600- series by creating a holder that wouldn't kink the film (pic related).
Like Contax vs Nikon, Rollei was way more advanced than Hasselblad when they finally built their SLR , but they were more expensive and not as reliable.
I had an SLX for a while, fun camera when it worked, but it had a short and blew its fuse every second roll of film. The big Ni-Cad battery also only lasted for 12 -18 shots, and with a 4-6 hour recharge time that was a pain in the ass.
