Anyone here tried using their Olympus E-M5 or E-M1 series to scan film negatives? Asking because these cameras has a high res mode wherein you can shoot 64MP Raw files.

I'm using a 24MP full frame but I think these cameras with their high res mode can squeeze in more detail especially when scanning 120 film. Planning on getting one especially since em5 ii can be had for cheap.

I've tried, doesn't work. I found that even with a perfectly motionless rigid stand, IBIS off, and using a flash for illumination, I still ended up with softer results from the EM1ii than from an A7i with the same lense. I don't know if I was stil getting too much movement for the high res to turn out, or if I was just not using good enough lenses, or if I was just so far past the diffraction point at f/5.6 and 2:1 to see any benefit from it. I tried 50/2.8(or 3.5) macros (and enlarger lenses) from all brands, 100/4, 80/5.6, etc. Where there is a minor advantage is if you scan smaller format film, like 110. You can fill the frame without having to fuck around reversing your lense, etc. Just buy full frame.

I'm using a 16MP E-M10 for it.

The slides I'm scalling were all shot on manual focus cameras so focus is a little soft anyway.
Copying them with a higher res cam wouldn't improve quality in any way, right?

Depending on how you're going to scan, it's trivial to composite it in software if you're able to take multiple pictures from different locations of the image

I have an Olympus Pen-F. I've used it with the 60mm f/2.8 macro to scan negatives, but the issue with that is your mileage will vary with the setup you use.

It's... it's hard to get a set-up that's going to give you enough light, and you're capturing 3:2 images with a 4:3 sensor - you'll have to deal with not using up all of the frame of the Olympus camera.

In terms of the high res mode? I've never used it beyond a few examples. The 64mp jpeg is hard to edit, but the 80mp raw is massive. The issue is that not every piece of editing software actually accepts the high res orf raws, and will do cropping for no reason.

There's your problem.
MFT is notoriously bad at adapting 35mm vintage lenses. If you're not doing the film scanning with the Olympus 60mm macro lens, then you're always going to get really bad results.
