ektar and portra were derived from vision 2, an emulsion designed for scanning and slide duping, both of which enable lots of post processing
in fact, technical sheet for both films highlight its scanning capabilities
ektar is as finicky with color temperature as slide films, while delivering none of deep tones you may achieve with velvia; not that they're bad emulsions, on the contrary, i like em very much, but it's hard to justify it's use
since color film market is a but shade of what it once was, many pro labs will keep same chems for weeks, leading to sub par development; it's hardly economical to develop at home, since most folks don't have access to jobo, 6 baths kits, etc and good manual processing takes a long time to learn
