how can i get this look? i have a very similar camera (he's using the sony a7rii in this and i got a a7iii). his photos look a bit softer yet still sharp, is it a pro-mist filter!?also loving his colors so if anyone has advice on how i can get my raws to look like that are appreciated

i know that thers split toning but by split toned pictures just don't look like that. his pictures have this soft quality to it. pic rel case in point

and here's archive link to his post, he mentions using nik glamour glow plugin, and on flickr he says he doesn't use any optical filter on the majority of his photos

ok i got the nik plugins he uses and i found the glamour effect he was talking about. that is exactly what i meant when i said his pictures look pleasingly soft yet detailed. love it. will definitely integrate that into my workflow. the other stuff i didn't find/went over my head. if someone can explain his process to a beginner a bit better than be cool but otherwise I'm just happy to have found that glamour glow and will incorporate that into my workflow (which right now just consists raw from sony a7iii->capture one->fix white balance if its off->10-20 sat, 0-10 contrast (mostly less than 5)->possibly adjust exposure/shadows/highlights very very slightly max +-20->chroma reduction on 75 if i see any chroma noise otherwise left on 50->luma reduction either left on the preset of 50 or even less if i want some grain->crop and resize->export and load jpeg into photoshop camera raw->highlight and shadows colors blue+pink or red+green or any combination i like in the picture->done. will add the glamour effect at the end from now on and play around with maybe using an actual hardware diffusion filter in the future. the rest of what he does i don't understand but that's okay, it be nice to get a better understanding of it if someone can explain it but i don't feel the need to copy him 1:1. in this one i also applied a graduation filter with a mask over it so i could paint some of the highlights in a different color to get some variety in there. might keep doing that. pic rel is the result.

this is the original jpeg picture straight out of camera in "standard" picture style. i used the raw for editing though as described above.

Sorry this is not related to your question but could you please tell me how happy you are with your A7iii and what do you mainly use it for?
I really want to get one myself but considering it's price I want to know as many opinions as possible

I will be taking all kinds of pictures with it but it's main purpose will be portrait and people photography

no really, im still experimenting with how to process my pictures rn but if i cant find an easy way to get good color i might sell it for a canon or fuji. on paper the camera is sooo good. good dynamic range, crazy good low light, good stabilisation in body, all the latest tech like eye tracking af and zebras, video is really good and much more convenient than a lot of its competitors with af and stabilisation and slog/hlg but but the colors just look so shit straight out of camera. so digital and lifeless. from a technical standpoint the pictures are good,but there is just no magic. yo gotta be a magicin yourself to add that. this Japanese guy is, but im not, and i don't think very many photographers are. im coming from canon and my 5d mk i had such beautiful colors i would just use jpegs most of the time because i didn't wanna ruin the magic. skin would just pop. colors would amaze you. I'll keep trying for a while but if i cant do it ill sell it and get a canon 5d mk4 or one of the canon mirrorless cameras or maybe even fuji since they have nice color too but im a bit on the fence about that because they don't have full frame sensors.

i got my sony specifically because i wanted good low light performance and video. i think i like my 5d mark i more for photographing people because the skin looks so good on it. i'd probably get a 5d mark iv if i was you. though zebras are pretty handy, maybe some mirrorless option by canon idk.

i can edit raw just fine its just that i don't want to spend 2 hours on every picture, i also like having a consistent style which is easier to achieve the less post processing you have to do and lastly i have yet so see anybody get colors out of the sony that canon has sooc. its not that i cant edit raws, its that you gotta be a 1% photographer to get the magic out of a sony that canon has sooc. ill keep experimenting for a bit before i decide, maybe ill find the sony magic somewhere.

That’s exactly why I switched from Sony myself. The colors are definitely off, at least to me. You can create great photos but it requires so much work to get it just right.

I’ve tried all the creative styles on Sony and the only one I like is the B&W creative style lol I used to have an old a6000 and the thing made people look like they had jaundice. It was really bad… I bought an updated Sony and the colors improved drastically but I still think all the colors are terrible. For some reason, it appears Sony doesn’t blend colors well and you tend to get blotchy skin tones unless you mess with HSL sliders for half an hour.

op here again. the thing is, video on the a7iii is amazing. its so close in quality to the bmpcc 4k which IMO is the gold standard in prosumer video but it does have all the things that make life easier which the bmpcc 4k doesn't (autofocus and stabilisation) AND it is an actually full frame DSLR too which videocameras are usually trash at. this guy shoots his video on the a7iii
