I'm a normalfag and enjoy my Portra 400 if you are looking to stay within Kodak instead of Fuji. I like Ektar 100 for the RICH blues and greens it pulls out. I recommend the Portra though as your standard film ammo.

Anyone have any experience with Fuji Microfine developer? I'm looking forca fine grqin developer to use alongside the crispier Rodinal. Also looking to try TFX-2 for the acutance.

There seems to be very little info about Microfine out there, but the few people who use it seem to really love it.

I would say Craigslist but a lot of boomers wanting cold hard cash for their gear. I say try eBay, as much as I now hate saying it. eBay fucking sucks now with a lot of stuff, but it's usually the best place to find stuff that KEH or the others don't have.

it's fine i've done stores harder than that. the trick is just getting a pre-paid return label which you put on an empty bubble wrap envelope (really great if you've got some photoshopped logo on the envelope so they think it's an ad or something) photoshop away everything but the scanning code and the tracking number and send it away, usually they throw it away thinking its garbage. wait a while and start a dispute on PP. they're gonna side with you 9 times out of 10.

i've done KEH before, although I scratched the camera body with a knife, oh well, saved me like 1.5k lol

Alright, so I picked up some expired film today, any idea wth I should meter it as?

Ektar100 expired in 2016

Portra 400 expired in... 2011 maybe? Its 400nc which i think got discontinued then

And then a bunch of kodak MAX800, which i think is like faster ultramax? Expired in 2003. I love grain so im kinda excited for this one.

Shoot at native ISO and aperture. For the 400, if you're worried for any degradation; shoot one HALF a stop up.

M800, immediately add one half stop to get the film to "resolve" as natively as possible.

Native means your largest available aperture. It does start to make a difference the lower you go because you're now introducing immediate quality loss for a center point on expired film. In somewhat surprising terms: the smaller the hole you make it, the more aggressive the film has to make up for it, since it is now lower quality than if it was new or slightly degraded.

I thought I had made this sound as easy as possible to follow, either /p/ is a lot more dumb than I thought, or you guys should really start reading on the internet more.

How are you so dumb? The lens is literally made at its largest aperture, ie native and then the aperture blades are put in which allow artificial constriction of the aperture of the lens so you aren't stuck with just the native. I swear the kids on this board are dumb.

It really doesn't. 28mm f/4 is the same exposure as 200mm f/4. That's the whole idea of the f/number system.

One of my lenses is really dark when i look through it when its attached to my camera but if i look at it when its not attached it looks fine. I shined a light through it and i don't see any obstruction. What would cause this? It is only this lens. Every other one looks fine.

It won't at all. It will make it hard to see what you're shooting in low light, but your camera closes the aperture down to however dim you have it set a fraction of a second before the shutter opens normally, so the results on the film will be the same.

Try composing/focusing with it wide open, then tightening it up just before you hit the shudder I guess?

Yep, TMAX 100 is arguably the sharpest, finest-grain B&W film outside of weird technical films that are hard to use.

If you (she) wants high sharpness and the ability to do big enlargements then it's perfect. If you want more grain and more (dare I say) soul then something like Ilford HP5 would be better.

Also cheap B&W films like Fomapan and Kentmere are totally fine as well, just with a little less definition.

I took a photo of the moon at almost full capacity with a 70-200 mm lens f4.5 with a x2 teleconverter at 800 iso. I did this specific exposure at one second, if I remember correctly. What would you suggest I do? It's too much light coming in, so should I focus on using a lower iso and reduce exposure length?

I have similar photos with f8,f,16,f22,f32 (after the x2 increase in the teleconverter) at exposures ranging from 2.5 to 15 seconds.

Reduce your aperture without increasing your shutter speed.
All you've done is taken approximately the same exposure using different settings.
The moon is basically a spot of full daylight brightness in the night sky so expose with that in mind. You can definitely (and should, for maximum detail, given you only have 400mm) use a slow film.

Is a 35 dollar reusable disposable type camera good? I saw pictures on them and they looked pretty good. Kind of like the aesthetic and honestly it sounds like one roll of film could cost that much to fully develop anyways... I'm sure it can be cheaper if you are smart about it.

I shiot it with an IS lens all the time at night. Its greqt for might since it doesnt produce red layer halation like lets say superia would. I'm not sure but I think the color layers are stacked in a different order, so halation develops on the blue layer. If not, it just handles halation better than other stocks.

You can usually find Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 in Walmart. CVS and Walgreens seem to have stopped getting stock of Kodak Gold 200 in my area. Everything else, you’d need to order online or go to a dedicated camera shop or film shop.

Hey brewskis - I bought a Zorki 4 for dirt cheap and took a bit of a leap of faith. Now - I can't cock the shutter curtain by turning the dial clockwise. I also can't fire the shutter. Only think I noticed is that the shutter curtain seems "sticky" when using the longer exposure times. But I think I can get that fixed with a bit of weapon oil and the repair manual!

You might be already but expose to the right. A tiny bit of raw clipping in the thinnest areas (darkest shadows) isn't an issue.
Also as you're using DT 3.6, I've found that turning on the new Chromatic Aberration module (it replaces the old one of the same name) magically makes digital noise turn to monochrome which should blend in better.

From what I've heard it's pretty much random chance whether your film will be fogged or not. Of course the lower the ISO the lower the risk, but fogged 100 film is not unheard of.

I have an Agfamatic 3008 on the way and I'd like to get a flash
This uses the flipflash conenctor, but I can't say I'll already have to deal with sourcing film and sourcing flash bulbs seems like a bit of a pain
I've done some searching and it appears you can get reusable flashes that have the flip flash connector, but I can't find a search term on eBay that brings these up

I've never used a chemical stop bath with HC-110 for dev, only rinsing with water. however, I've gotten tired of the fixer smell and just bought some tetenal low odour, which isn't acidic but pH neutral. will this cause a problem when developing, since I'm not neutralizing the basic developer with an acidic stop or fixer or is water enough?

Haven't done film photography in ages. Still have my massive camera collection, all 120 and 35mm. My main obstacle has been cost of film. Most of my film used to be bought and developed in Ukraine where it was cheap, but now I am in Canada and it is a hobby dominated by hipsters and homosexuals, and the price has been inflated.

Water doesn’t neutralise developer in any sense, water-only stop baths simply dilute the developer to homeopathic levels basically. Really the only advantage of using an acid-stop is the immediacy at which development is halted, that’s it.
I’m personally not a fan of acid stops so only use water and I’ve never had any issues: HC110 is my usual developer.

of course there's a bit of spillage when you deal with a lot of volume of chems
the neutralizing question was a whole different thing, what I did was buying odorless fixer to replace using ilford rapid fix, but it's pH neutral and i'm not using any chem stop bath to neutralize the basic hc-110 (the acidic rapid fixer was probably enough along with water so that's why I asked if I had to use a stop bath now)

what mount are the fuji lenses ? if it's the old X mount (not the one for the mirrorless X-series camera) then I'm not sure, it's a pretty unpopular system

if you want to use the Nikons, I would suggest a Nikon FM, they're tanks and they're relatively cheap.

Why are scans at film development places so expensive?
I've found a place that charges £3.50 to develop 35mm film but then a minimum of £6 for standard res JPEGs or £13 for high res TIFFs

I may just get a light board and use my DSLR

scanning is a fucking ripoff here in sweden. they want £47 for a whole 36 roll if you want high res TIFF. some stores offer a price of £30 for dev and high res scan in an imacon/hasselblad scanner.

i'll probably just get my own plustek 135i and start scanning. my family has a lot of negatives and slides as well so it's probably worth it

Agreed. I use a plustek instead. It's slow but the quality is very good. G2p is free and good for inversions if you have Photoshop.

I heard that the amount of fixer you save by using an actual acid stop bath ends up being worth more than the amount of stop bath you use, since the stop bath is just some cheap acetic acid but fixer is more expensive. So when I bought my first chems I just went with the stop bath figuring it would probably save me a small amount of money in the long run.

If you are flying through the US, you need to get it hand-checked if they use one of those big cylindrical scanners. Those will fog your film pretty badly after one pass and must be avoided.

The conventional kind of scanner will have no effect on your film. Kodak warns that repeated exposure to scanners may fog fast film, but I've never seen it.

I quite like the Nikon ES-2 but it does of course require a compatible lens.

My local camera shop ripped me off recently.
They get their dev done by Kodak and for 35mm it costs like €6 and another €1,8 or so if you want prints.
So one day I drop off a roll of 120 and I thought fuck it, I'll get some prints too, why not.
Turns out that for 120 the shop scans and print it themselves. Fuckers charged me €12 for this.

your main choice is Contax/kiev mount (kiev series cameras)
or Leica mount (fed/zorki/leningrad)
Both great camera platforms if you are unafraid of totally manual and often no lightmeter use (which desu is right for a rangefinder shoot from hip slide focusy emphasis).
Lenses tend to be cheaper for the former and more expensive for the latter but there are excellent choices existing for all. If you want the more modern features (tripod speeds namely, get zorki 3 or later) if you want a purer leicaesque experience, go for a fed 2 (gives you flash sync socket at a cheap price).
many of the m39 mount industars are really surprisingly sharp, back in the day people used them for enlarger lenses lol
